My car did the same thing for over a year. I bought a new optima battery and put vaseline on the terminal and wire ends. You can also use dielectric grease. With these cars, it takes hardly any corrosion to cause problems . My car would even sometimes cut out completely while driving. What kind of alternator are you buying? A remanufactured or a new AC Delco alternator is ****. You need a high amp alternator. I switched to a 160 amp and no problems since. More $$$, but better quality.

ok, just installed the new voltage regulator in my old alt. so far so good! i read the voltage off the battery for about 10-15 minutes and it stayed right between 14.18 with the fans on and 14.31 with the fans off, just like it should. the new delco alt was running at 14.62 and would drop to 13.58 (when the lights would flicker). i'll keep you all posted with what happens here. hope it doesn't eat up this regulator too.

i did, and it works great. but i figured that since i already have the new alt that is doing the same thing that my old one, i might try to swap the new regulator in to the new alt to see if i will get good results. maybe they use cheep junk regulators on the aftermarket alts.

using rebuilds is always a crap shoot.......most use cheap chinese parts that dont work worth a damm......which is why so many remans crap out.....but we are still at the basic premise.........a CS130D is barely strong enough to power our f bods

i recommend a junkyard alt off of a low mileage truck.........a reman would be a crap shoot.......the guy in that vid you watched also sells alts.....top notch but pricey......as far as i know GM does not sell alts new.....just a GM branded reman

Ebay is your best bet. Just buy it from an American supplier, not any imported ****. You can usually tell just by the way the ad is. Most times it's actually a store in the US, like "John's parts" or something. Just type in KG3....

I'm having this same issue. It's annoying the ***** out of me. I'm going to be testing my volt regulator on the alternator tonight.

What is the 2003 truck that alternator came out of?

Edit: Found it on rockauto.

Okay so I checked the alternator and battery, both are 100% fine. Going to check the grounds for any oxidation over the weekend but after that I am all out of ideas. I don't want to replace the alternator if there is nothing wrong with it.

I'm running TWO motorcity reman'd alternators, one in my red TA and one in my black TA... Both 160 amp.

The red TA charges FINE, the black TA drains/dims at a stop in gear when the fans are on, badly, to around 7/8 volts... Then I blip the throttle and they go up to 12/13.

Soooo...

I've switched alternators between the two... No change.

Then, I switched batteries between the two while the alternators were still switched... NO CHANGE! lol

These problems don't necessarily have anything to do with alternators, guys... I checked all grounds, and all battery cables/terminals, grounds are clean!

Still trying to figure this out myself.

Just raised the drive idle and neutral idle of my black Trans Am to 600 and 850 (I throw it in neutral at long stops and red lights), and it's driving me less crazy now... But once the fans go high speed, it doesn't matter what alternator is in the car!

Anybody?
