Post How many are too many?

I'm in the market for a 98-02 SS w/ 6spd, t-tops or convertible with leather. Anyways, my question is how many miles (in your guys opinion) are too many for the used market? I realize that regardless the car is going to be 9-13 years old, but I want to minimize the problems that could arise. I'm going to have to drive the car back from the location (where ever in the US) which would tack on a couple thousand right away. Most of the vehicles I've been seeing in my price range (around 12k) are 50k-120k miles, where should I start to be worried/avoid them? I want a bone stock car to pass inspection, preferably owned by a distinguished gentleman.

look for something clean with the lowest miles possible. pay a little more for something exceptional.

For a car this age, your most important question is, "WHERE?" If you want the car to last, getting one from an area south where they do not use road salt will give you a product that will have its expensive parts last.

Mileage is not very relevant. It all depends on how hard those miles are. There are 100K cars that I'd much rather have than some 50K cars that have been raced.

Sometimes the ones that have been raced get better care than the ones that haven't and stock.

Wow buying a used performance car is a crap shoot at best. 99TA I bought only had 28k on it and "LOOKED" like new, it was beat to **** and had a very lean tune loaded into it. The rear failed, the pistons broken, the fuel system rusted out, trans failed and alot of other problems. So mileage means little, its hard to judge the overall mechanical condition of a car in a few mins looking at it. I refuse to buy any car without a good long drive-2 hrs or so and a complete going over looking at the oils etc. Its just too easy to miss things. A dam good way to check engine condition is to pull a few spark plugs, If i had done that before I bought the 99TA I wooood have seen all the porcelin on the plugs were melted from running too lean, wooood have noticed number 7 cylinder plug was oiled down badly.

Thanks for the advice boys, I ended up going with a 2002 SS convertible. 6 speed, black leather, red with a black top and CME exhaust. Only 18k miles as well Pick it up this weekend.
