firebird engine running too fast!

I start my engine and it is running very fast. I heard a pop so i turned the engine off. I started it back up still running fast put it in reverse and it spead off backwards. On the street I had to stop far away from cars because the car would come to complete stop then try to go again with my foot on the brake. Please tell me what is happening.

prob need a little more info here bro.....what bird, engine, etc do you have?

funny story....i had a dirt dobber build a nest near my throttle cable lever once. it got stuck and every time i turned the car on it was like the gas pedal was floored. popped the hood and saw it immediately.

By running fast, do you mean the idle rpm's are high? If so, what's it idling at? Check to see if your throttle cable or throttle body blade is sticking.

Could be IAC valve stuck open due to carbon buildup, or just worn out. Easy to clean/replace.

also check the TPS sensor.I bet its the IAC .did you do any work on the intake?

If a cacuum leak is too large the idle control system can't compensate enough so car idles too fast- i vote leak - one of those small hoses -gotta check em all!
