coolent light on
As the post states my coolant light has been staying on when I drive. I know the fluid levels are good and the car runs great as far as temperature. Im mainly concerned because this happend in my jeep and a few weeks later I needed a new water pump. Should I be concerned? Also if I wanted to remove this light or reset it without a programmer how would I do it? a battery pull? My concern is mainly because I want to pass inspection but the light won't go away. Options?

well i am a licensed inspector in NY state and i can tell you the coolant light wont cause you to fail. any shop to say so is not a shop worth going to. i havnt owned my fbody long enough or worked on it enough yet to really be useful in fixing the problem.. on other vehicles i have experienced the sensor going bad that keeps track of coolant levels (usually located in the bottom of the plastic bottle) not sure if the fbodies have a similar setup to be possible to happen on one.
also just remember if you unhook the battery you cant get the NY inspection until the monitors are ready too.. only allowed 2 incomplete monitors on a 98, so if you unhook the battery and reset it, you will have to drive it 30-100 miles to clear monitors.

what part of NY are you in?? i am up in oswego county, about a half hour north of syracuse, if you are in reasonable distance i can help you get it inspected at my neighbors shop without getting ripped off. my friend works at Cole Muffler (a chain like monroe muffler) in Pulaski NY and their bosses want them to sell $300 worth of work for every inspection they do. pick your shop carefully.

I've never heard of this being a "common" problem but as long as the coolant level is ok then you shouldn't have to worry too much. It's a pretty simple and cheap fix to replace the coolant level sensor. It should be on the bottom of the reservoir. Only takes about 20 min to replace.

Maybe I've gotten lucky then cause I have never had this problem on any of my 3 F-Boats. Could be cause I am very meticulous about maintaining my fluids though and don't let them get very dirty.

now does this sensor have anything to do with the temperature to set the readiness monitors? I either have a problem with my catalytic converter my o2 sensors or this coolent sensor because my egr and my cat are constantly showing as not ready thru the scanner, no matter what I do or how many driving cycles I make. My other question is will I fail inspection if I buy an aftermarket Catalytic Converter like magnaflow thru autozone and have it installed in a shop here in NY? The inspection guy said i need either one to pass the egr or the cat that is showing as not ready he advised me to keep driving but 500 miles later same issue. What to do?
