Default synthetic oil in high mile car

My 1998 z28 has 145k. I got it with 138k. I have no idea what kind of oil the last owner used. Anyway I hear it can cause leaks? But only if I have a leak. Well all i know is my oil pan is pretty wet. I was talking to a guy from castrol I told him about the oil pan and he still says it wont cause a leak. For some reason I dont buy it. I been using reg castrol GTX. (White bottle) I wanna switch to castrol edge.

i know i got my 00 z28 with 47xxx on it and changed to penzoil ultra and didnt leak for about 3 oil changes and when the oil started to get cleaner when i would change it every 4000 miles it started to leak a lil and i guess it is because my gaskets are older and it seeps through them easier then conventional oil cause its smaller particals. it now has 62xxx on it and im going to change back to regular or maybe high mileage now cause it also eats about a quart between oil changes.

I have a silverado with a 5.3 and 213,XXX miles. It had conventional oil used for 90% of it's life. When I bought it, I switched to mobil 1. It already had a rear main leak only. I fixed the rear main, and haven't had any leaks. I honestly don't think it causes any leaks. Plus it's a better oil.

Synthetic only causes leaks when it cleans away the deposits dino oil left, due to poor maintenance habits. If the car had reasonably decent oil change intervals, switching to synthetic shouldn't cause any leaks. But, if it does, switching back to dino won't stop the leaks, because the previously leak-stopping deposits will have already been cleaned out with the synthetic.

Bit of a toss-up if you don't know the history of the car, unfortunately.

Bingo....been through it with 3 cars. My LT1 at 86k didn't leak a bit, I switched to synthetic, it marked it's spot wherever it went. On the other hand, my Z71 had 120k when I bought it. I switched it to synthetic and haven't had a drop since. It was as clean as a 20k mile truck though. It's all about the history.

well because I got mine with 138k and have no idea what the last owners put in it i might just stick to the reg stuff. He had a cheap filter on there from jiffy lube or some crap so ima guess he was running pennzoil or some crap in it.

Ain't nothing wrong with Pennzoil. Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra are very popular synthetic oils around here and other car circles as well. You can't HURT anything by switching to synthetic, so I say why not unless cost is an issue. If a leak pops up then fix it. The idea of keeping dino oil around just to deny a potential problem isn't wise...

or you can go for a semi synthetic? but if you really want to stay on the safe side, stay away from the synthetic.

I know it isn't an LS1, but I got my 02 Trailblazer with 112k on it and I switched it to synthetic. 140k now, no leaks to speak of.

I bought my 01 SS with 136k on the clock. First 2 oil changes I used Mobile1. I've since changed to Castrol Edge and my valvetrain noise disappeared.

Next oil change for the Escalade (LQ9) I ditched the Mobile1 and used the Edge. Guess what? Even my wife could notice how quiet the motor itself was running.

I'm sold on Castrol Edge. I as well have noticed my oil getting cleaner and cleaner when I change it.

This guy hit the nail on the head imo. Running dino just to hide a potential problem is stupid. Synthetic has way better protection charecteristics and is the way to go.

I have been using synthetic since I got my car @ 125k, now has little over 140k and no leaks at all. Last owner said he always used synthetic and I'm pretty sure he had it before 100k

Check the pan bolts.

Seriously my brother's car was leaking oil like mad, leaving little pools everywhere he parked it. Was told the pan gasket was shot. Crawled underneath, checked the pan bolts, some were loose-ish. Tightened them down (what could it hurt?) hoping to maybe at least slow it down a little. It didn't slow it down, it practically stopped the leak. Might leave an occasional drip every once in a while.

So, it's worth checking.
