**Changed my differential oil today... PICS
Thats all
changed my diff oil for the first time 54k miles
the old oil was quite foamy (pics) anyone know why??
I replaced it with mobil 1 gear oil and a bottle of the GM additive
$8.99 x2 and $13 (dealer ripoff) and a 4$ gasket
Didn't really feel a huge difference YET
anyway here are pics
can anyone confirm if this is a posi/limited slip diff ??

to be honest, it probably took me like 3 hours Lol
thats only bc it was my first time, so i took my sweet time making sure i didnt F anything up haha
I made sure to clean everything real good and even painted the bracket that covers the top part of the differential
so it probably shouldn't take you that long
it was pretty simple to do too, I'm not very mechanically inclined but i was still able to so it so, yea

Thats what i have been hearing. Hmm, I have no idea how that could have happened, maybe a bad diff cover? It was kinda banged up when i removed it.
I thought about having the stealership do it, but it would have been $179.99 at my local GM.
I thought it would be a cool learning experience if i did it myself at least once too.
I expected the smell to be much worst. Yea it was fishy, but i've smelled fishier things haha
Thank you. The car was in an accident in 05 before i bought her and i always worried that they switched out the axle. so thank you

I'm changing my rear axle seals and bearings soon.....I almost bought my new fluids at the dealership. They wanted $45.00 for 3 qrts of 80w90 non-synthetic (Strange requires that) and $14.95 for the GM friction modifier additive.
The same IDENTICAL stuff was sold at Bennet Auto.....all of it for $30.00 total.
50% less.

I'll also say water contamination. There's a vent that allows air in to keep pressures equalized.
If the car has ever been driven through very deep water, it'll get in.
I would say after seeing that, a second fluid change is is needed after a short drive. This will flush out all the contaminated fluid.

Torsen diffs don't need the friction mod additive. Won't hurt anything having it in there, but serves no purpose.
edit: because the Torsen has no clutch plates...it's a gear drive.

Check the top of your rear diff case, there should be a vent sticking out of the center section, passenger side near the axle tube. Yours is likely either damaged or missing. Either that or you've been driving through deep puddles repeatedly and water seeped in through the axle tube seals.

Normal hypoid gear lube should be black and smelly. The tan/brown discoloration of the fluid residue is a clear indicator of water contamination. Seen this enough w/ Mercruiser outdrives that had a prop shaft seal fail, the gear lube comes out looking like a chocolate shake.
