Default Does this A/C clutch look right?

Just received this GM A/C Clutch #6581515 and the friction surface plate is not mounted straight. You can see it in the picture, I am concerned I will not be able to mount it with an even tolerance across the pulley. Just want to double check before I send it back, thanks.

That picture is so small. It kinda looks like a UFO that landed on an Incan causeway near the jungle. Can't tell you anything with it being that tiny though, sorry.

That doesn't look right at all. It won't just slide into better position by hand, I suppose? I can't imagine that thing would be stable if you were able to bolt it up. If you can't even move it by hand to straighten it out, I'd say that thing would not only not work if it were bolted up, but would possibly vibrate itself to death being so severely out of balance.

I kinda wonder if it took a hit somewhere and knocked it down the shaft a little. I'd almost wanna flip it over and smack it a few times on the one side to see if it would reposition it properly, but that's just me though.

I sent back the defective part in the above picture and got a new one. Here is a picture of the new clutch, nice and straight across the friction plate!

I installed the new A/C clutch plate and the noise is gone. I had the "A/C clutch noise when A/C is turned off" problem. Comparing the movement of the friction plate between the old and new was night and day. Not too bad getting at it from the bottom. I rented the puller(#27150) and clutch plate holder(#27000) from AZ. This fix was cheap (50.00) compared to a whole new compressor.

You can see the rust on the old plate.
Basically it was not moving freely forward and back and would not "retract" all the way when the A/C was turned off and would just barely scrape the pulley surface making the all too familiar metallic sound.

Installed

stupid question here..

does the clutch still has to spin when you turn on the ac EVEN IF THEIRS NO PRESSURE IN THE SYSTEM AT ALL..??

Or does it only spins and does its job ONLY WHEN IS CHARGE..?

am asking this because i had my engine pulled and rebuild.. the ac was working fine before that.. but i had to take off the compresor and disconnect a few lines and theirs no pressure on the system. Just want to know if my compresor/clutch when bad.

Thanks!

The pulley always spins.

The clutch only engages and spins when you turn on the AC. If the system is borked (empty or whatever) it will detect that and not engage the clutch. Disconnecting the lines borked your AC.

Good write up and pics.

Gives hope to people with this issue without swapping the whole compressor.

WRONG..!! ALL IT NEEDED WAS A RECHARGE SINCE IT ALL CAME OUT WHEN I WENT TO DO MY REBUILD AND TOOK THE AC SYSTEM APART!
Just didnt know that the system would detect no pressure.. and not engage the clutch.

The way i found my compressor/clutch did work before i started charging was to bypass the AC RELAY..! And thats all it was.. NICELY CHARGED AND COOL! NOW!!!

That's what I said. See the first part of the paragraph I wrote:

Chill out a little bit. Pun intended
