Default Rusty brake lines & driveshaft

Is this common w/ 100 on the clock or did the p/o have the car somewhere wacky (near salt water)? My mechanic has a nice spare drive shaft ($50) & we will bend up some new brake lines. The rest of the bottom is fine with a bit of surface rust which I did prime and paint (the brown spots is primer). The drive shaft is really rusty & I didn't want him to start banging on it w/o a spare ready. Is this normal?

Best pics I had on hand.

I'm at 110,xxx and my car looks pretty similar to the little bit I can see in your pics. Why would your mechanic be bangin on your driveshaft though?

My idea to see if the rust falls apart & I end up w/ a hole. I guess not a great idea lol.

your avatar pic shows snow on the ground?
the cause of your rust is all the calcium chloride they put on the roads if you drive in the winter. the gm trucks since 2000 are notorious for brake lines rotting out. my 2006 with 75k miles just had a hard line blow, i know someone with around a 2005 year truck original owner with only 30k miles had a hard line fail. and the shop i went to inquiring about hard line replacement had 3 trucks there all in for hard line replacement.

Your driveshaft is fine. They all rust unless they are aluminum, but it's just surface rust. If your mechanic said he wanted to bang on it to test it I would be highly concerned. He knows you arent very well educated car wise and probably wants to take advantage of you. FYI.

If the lines look suspect replace them.... Where we live stuff like that rusts really easily if driven in the winter. Did he quote you on the brakelines? How much?

I agree.

As for the brake lines, sections of mine have looked rusty for over 6 years now, thanks to the weather and road salt here in Chicago. It's like they reached a certain point of surface rust, and then sort of just stayed the same ever since. I don't worry about it, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to replace them if you are concerned and feel so inclined.

The joy of road salt...I absolutely hate road salt so I won't put my Trans AM through a winter and the brake lines still look like new.

I have a 99 Sierra and I am pretty crazy about preventing rust on it. I spray lithium grease before each winter all over the brake and fuel lines, inside the rocker panel area, and inside the wheel well area (all common places to rust on these trucks).

Better to change them before they go - brakes arent something to play around with.

My TA is also a fair weather queen only and always has been thank G.

Relplaced all of my 2000 Silverado with stainless a year or two ago. Two blown lines within a few months, changed everything incuding flex hoses. Never worry about them again.

I don't know if the p/o drove it Winters but once the roads see salt the car is garaged until Spring. Brake lines will absolutely be changed in two weeks and I am the genius not my mechanic lol who suggested hitting the drive shaft to see if the rust is only surface deep. Glad to hear it is normal. Thanks for the advice guys.

Dunno about pre-bent for F-bodys, but this is where I got them for my truck. Looks like they also sell rolls of stainless for you to bend yourself.

classictube and inlinetube are the two big mail order places i know of.

i got mine from inlinetube for my truck, complete stainless pre-bent kit and got it 2 days after placing online order.

you may have to call and inquire about the f-body, don't assume it's not available if you don't see it on the website, for either place.

I've seen Inlinetube's product (for the older antiques anyway), and the quality is excellent. I have no experience with "classictube" though.
