Default 3rd door lock assembly in 3 years

Hey guys,

Why on Earth am I going through these door lock assemblies so often? I'm about to install the 4th one in 3 years. Luckily last time I picked one up I grabbed two. Any advice is appreciated!

Well, what's the problem with them?

Thanks for the reply! When you shut the door, the door just BANGS into the car. The latch isn't catching.

This is easy to fix:

- put screw driver in the latch
- pull up on door handle
- pull screw driver out to open the latch

The next question becomes: "How is it getting this way?" Maybe your door is sagging or is out of alignment?

Definite possibility that the door is sagging. In fact, for a while now I've noticed that the passenger door closes so much better than the driver's door. I went ahead and put my spare door latch in. I'll save the bad one for backup if I can get the latch to roll back over

need to figure out why door is sagging. Everyone says hinges but sometimes in the shitty door metal separating.

I bought one of the door alignment tools. it works for a while if the alignment isn't too far off.

you can also adjust the latch on the door or the catch on the door frame. they will buy you a tiny bit of adjustment.

So what's wrong with the latch? It looks like the latch just shut on you without being around the door pin. All you have to do is "unlatch" it and you are back to normal.

It's not electronically broken, is it?

This, like the last one, is broken internally. Probably from the BANG of trying to shut the door with the latch closed. You can take them apart with a tiny Torx screwdriver. With 2 assemblies now the actual latch has broken into several pieces.

Door is definitely sagging a bit. If I lift the door up while closing it closes much better. Thanks guys!

you can see that it must be, look at the door panel directly above the latch, it's beat to hell. I would say the constant bashing of that area would damage the mechanisms pivot point after repeated impacts.

^This for sure. Mine isn't as bad, but I'm guessing that it's only going to get worse if I don't address it now.

no visible chipping (white area) of the door panel, that tells me the door is sagging as that area is hitting the striker, the metal right behind there is the piece of the latch that closes around the striker.

here, I tried to explain it in a video
