Default 01z ps leak...

I've searched on here before posting and see that there's other threads regarding the issue, but of course, they are all diff. I pulled out my car out forge garage just to discover it's leaking ps fluid. I can't really pinpoint the leak yet but seems to be coming from under the pump. It sprays the fluid out, not coming from the top for sure... i haven't had a chance to get under the car to check where the leak is coming from.

Just some quick questions :

Is it more likely to be the pump from what I'm describing ?? If so, what's a price range for a new one these days?

Fluid needs to be topped off/ as the reservoir is low..which fluid should I go with?

Once I do fix the issue, I was thinking of doing the factory cooler delete. I've come across both ppl saying its ok to complete delete the cooler others that say you need a aftermarket. I wanted to just delete it, but if aftermarket cooler is safe way to go then so be it. Any links to which cooler I need ? All the threads I've found with links are all outdated/or product not carried by vendors any more.

a 'spraying' culprit could be the high pressure hose.

The cooler is not needed. In fact the coolant coming from the radiator is often hotter than the PS fluid and thus warms up the fluid.

Generally the leak is from seal at the bottom of the reservoir (O-ring) or the return line which is a molded rubber hose but if you say its spraying its likely the high pressure hose. Either way your going to have to get down there and verify that should be a pretty easy fix.

It's a light spraying mist, to deceive it better. I defiibalety have to get under and take a look. Will it still leak if it's the hight pressure line, when the car is off?

Ok I will definitely delete the cooler.. I live in txt and it does get very hot here.. Don't think that's a problem.??

Which fluid do you recommend to use?? I need to fill the reservoir tank ..

the return line does not have much pressure so if its leaking it should only be dripping. So likely its your high pressure hose.

I'm pretty sure you will be fine, a lot of cars came without the cooler stock but if you want you can hook up an oil cooler to the return side.

Any decent power steering fluid will work. I think I used the Prestone stuff.

So here's what I found .. It's the line that the tip of the screw driver is pointing at. It's got a small split. Is this the high pressure line??

yeah it looks like the high pressure hose, as the other goes to the reservoir.

Ok so my local parts store has the line in stock for $30... What else do I need to do the cooler delete?? And what's the best way to flush the fluid out?

you will need a new upper radiator hose. from radiator to pump instead of the 2 piece with the cooler in-between.

I'm finally getting around to fixing this issue, anyhow, how do you guys go about replacing the high pressure line? Do I have to remove the pulley ?? Or is there another way to do without removing it? I don't have a pulley removal tool

The HP line connects under the reservoir and under the alt-ernator. Don't see why you'd need to pull anything off to replace it. I disconnected my PS cooler this year. But, I live in Connecticut and rarely drive in weather >85 deg (PS coolant never above 200 deg). If I lived in southern Texas I'd have probably put an external cooler in for peace of mind and longevity of the PS system. Even my daily driver 2002 Lincoln Continental has a factory external PS cooler mounted in the front grille area. And it doesn't see near the heat that a '98-'02 LS-1 with fat tires can put out.

I recently had the same problem. I suppose you could do it without removing the pulley but it's IMMENSELY easier with the pulley off. My pulley remover is $18 at Harbor Freight and it works just fine for removal and install and it never hurts to have a useful tool around.

The line connects to the inboard side of the pump, then horseshoes up and back down and over the alternator into the steering rack. I had a Hell of a time getting the old line loose from my steering rack but other than that it's a pretty easy swap.

I would still keep a ps cooler but delete the stock unit. I mounted a transmission cooler under/behind the radiator and it cools much better than before. It cost me about $35 total for all needed parts.

I really dont see how I can get in there with out removing the pulley.




Does oreilly or autozne carry the pulley remover?? Any one know the part number..

Autozone carries it. I don't have the part number but it's a shelf tool. Went ahead and bought vs rent. Too inconvenient to keep going and getting it

I ended up going to auto zone and got the generic pulley puller they have to rent .. This is what I'm using

I've tighten in on the pulley and can't seem to ge the pulley off I've been fighting to get it off for the past hr .. I looked up a bid on YouTube (under ls1 pulley remover) , and folowed everything but it won't budge..my gingers are taking a beating from my hand slipping off and hitting up against the engine compartment .. Any help or input will be greatly appreciated

I believe that is the same puller I rented when pulling the pulley on my ps pump. I remember having some trouble getting the puller mounted but once mounted it was just a matter of tightening the center bolt until the pulley came off. Are you using a crescent wrench? If so, then I would say that's your problem. I don't remember what I used but typically a crescent wrench is my last resort tool when turning a bolt.

I just replaced mine (again) and had to use vise-grip on the bolt end and a long 21mm to turn the nut. I believe the insert in the pulley is steel so it is steel to steel and has to be one of the most difficult pulleys I've removed in my life. Once you get a couple of turns then it will start to be a little easier.

The first time getting that pulley off is terrible, because it's had 15 years to corrode and fuse together. You might want to get a 21mm wrench to get a better grip on that nut. I have very long ratchet extension that I laid across and used it to brace the wrench on the nut. Break fewer fingers that way. Then, I put a ratchet on the 16 or 17mm bolt head and broke it loose. Once it gave, it takes minimal effort.

Every time after, I've been able to just use both hands with no issues.

Oh, and when I put the pulley back on, I use some red synthetic grease on the shaft and pulley to act as an anti-sieze.
