Default First time engine/trans removal

As the title states I plan on removing the sub frame, engine and trans from the car through the bottom. I'm looking for helpful tips and suggestions since this will be my first time ever doing it from the bottom side. Should I remove the hood and front bumper?, what should I use to set everything down on and be able to roll it out from under the car?

Awhile ago I saw a write up, step by step on how to remove the engine, see if I can find it and post you a link.

Found it......in the sticky above.

No need to remove anything from the body. I used three Harbor Freight mover dollies to set the subframe on, one under the trans pan and one under each control arm.

The thread looks pretty complete to me and even has pictures of the whole operation.

Is your main worry that you don't have access to a lift?

Ok thanks this is what I was looking for. So you didn't have to remove the hood when using a hoist to lift the car body off?

Pretty much yeah, I won't be using a lift I'll just be using an engine hoist to raise the body off of the subframe. Its all ready to go right now, I just don't want to start pulling the body off the subframe and find out I need to remove the hood or front bumper for clearance to get the body high enough

I did it with just a pair of floor jacks. Removed the hood just to give me room to work, it wasn't necessary. You don't need to remove the front bumper.

The hardest thing for me was finding all the connected wiring, so go slow when you start to lift and keep checking- as you go.

I didn't use any ramps or anything on the back wheels, they were right down on the ground. Took off the front wheels and lowered the K-member down on to some furniture dollies and then lifted the body back up once the bolts were out.

Go through and label all the electrical connectors beforehand.... makes it much easier upon re-installation

I'll keep these things in mind guys, thanks. I'm hoping to drop the subframe this weekend or next weekend. I have most connections labeled as well already. I'm hoping everything goes smooth!

Well as you can see removal went well without any issues now on re-installation.... What's the best way bolt everything up to subframe and re-install or install k member and install motor and trans from top?

Put it back in the same way you took it out, everything connected to the subframe/k-member and roll it under the car.

I usually leave the front wheels on and just use one furniture dolly under the trans.

Or at least hang a pair of truck nuts on the bumper if you are going to show off like that!

I've done a few like that now, if inside I hang the front onto rafters if possible.

Lower the air pressure on all tires involved and the car is very stable, open and closing doors, climbing in half way to get tools/parts I left on the floor ect. I guess it looks sketchy but in person its very stable.

I will admit that I almost caused a few traffic accidents with that one, everyone driving by slowed down a lot!
