Default Which truck starter in Fbody?

Does anyone have a definitive answer as to whether the 4.8/5.3 or 6.0 truck starter works on ls1s? I've seen that some truck starters have 9 teeth and others have 11 teeth on the gear, can't figure out which is which. In every thread I've searched there's no concrete answer that says use the 4.8/5.3 or 6.0 starter. Anyone who's swapped in a truck starter feel free to chime in and say which one you used.

So I went to autozone to look at both the 4.8/5.3 and 6.0 starters and the 4.8/5.3 has 9 teeth on the starter gear and the 6.0 has 11. I assume I'll need the 2500 starter so when I drop my starter I'll double check the number of teeth on the gear.

Took my starter out and it broke on the small mounting tab. This is the 2nd time this year I've had a starter do this. Counted the teeth and there's 11 so looks like I'll be buying a 2500 starter.

Any idea why I keep breaking starters?

How are they going bad? Just stop working, physically broken or what? If they just stop working I would expect a bad ground or something along those lines.

They've physically broken. I put the new truck starter in over the weekend and went to crack the car over and it'll start to spin almost 1 full turn of the flexplate and stop suddenly. This same thing happened last time and the flexplate was bent, so I'm going to pull the transmission and put another flexplate in. This **** is getting annoying.

What broke? The tab on the starter? Was is the two long bolts starter? Or the model with one long and one short bolt?

Are you shimming the starter?

They change the number of teeth to increase the speed or increase the torque.

If you have a higher compression motor I would probably go with the 9 tooth one ie more torque.

The tab on the f body starter broke which has caused a slight crack in the starter mount on the block.

This it what I went with. I went to autozone before I bought it to look at the number of teeth on the 1500 and 2500 starters.

No, I'm not shimming the starter.

Thats what I thought.

You need to get the starter that has the two long bolts. Get rid of the short bolt and that tab is built up across to the other side of the starter.

With the two long bolt type starters.....you cannot break that tab and you won't crack the aluminum mounts on the block.

See this starter.....no little tab, its all built up like the other side. Takes two long bolts.

I already got the 2 long bolt starter, but there is a slight crack on the starter tab on the block so I'm going to deal with this in the spring. No point now since I'm not going to be driving the car at all.

The teeth on both looked fine. I pulled the transmission to thoroughly inspect the flexplate.
