i have been tracking an oil leak for months. replaced top end components, oil sender, cam position, intake seals. oil is all over filter and bottom of car to the rear end. clutch looks dry, same with pilot bearing/plug. if the rear main seal is leaking i dont see how it gets high up on the filter and starter.

The likely leak source will be the highest, furthest forward location that is oily. The engine fans, gravity and vehicle movement will move the oil back and down. You're probably better off cleaning it up really really really good, then running the car around for a day or two, or sometimes just letting it idle 20 min will show the leak.

This is very good advice. Get it cleaned up as best as you can. Take some extra time. You don't even need to pay a lot for engine cleaner. Simple Green the **** out of it, spray with a hose, dry it off. And I think that you will find the leak without needing to drive it. Any work done on the engine lately?
There is a bunch of oil of the starter bolt close to the block. Also on the oil bypass. Rear cover and seal look dry. So maybe the cover is leaking and ending up on the starter bolt. Thats there it would go. Take a look at the clutch parts. about 10K miles on them. So now that its all apart, should I replace the rear main seal, cover seal and pilot bearing?
Do you see the small 2 bolt cover that is directly above your oil filter. Remove it and throw away the gasket, clean up surfaces and use only a good ultra black Permatex to reseal. Let it set and dry overnight (what I would do) for best results but not necessary. There is max oil pressure there and it pushes through the gasket. Oil goes everywhere for some reason. Fixed many that looked the same way and that's all it was. Hopefully its that simple for you too.
do you have to remove the cat to get the gasket off? i believe this is one of the problems. only thing is the starter bolt is dripping oil and thats on the other side. iam debating if i should do the rear main and cover.
You may have to if you cant get at it. Try that before you do anything else. I have seen many that are dripping off the starter and look the same way. Being there is nothing in your bell housing I would say its a pretty good chance that's all it is. If anything is leaking in the back you would definitely see it in the bell housing area for sure. I've seen them with oil dripping off the rear end and all the way forward and all it was, 2 bolt cover. It really is hard to believe oil could get all the places I'm sure it is just from that small cover. But it does.
under my car was EPA superfund site with all the oil it was leaking and spreading over every sq inch of the underbody.....i swore up and down it was the rear main leaking but never had the time to fix it......finally one day i pull the engine.......the rear main seal was perfect not a leak to be found......it was the oil pan gasket !!! the rubber seal attached the metal frame of the gasket had deteriorated and let it leak like the exxon valdez
Yea right, I jacked up the car under the oil pan, NOT. The jack is just in the pic, not functional. Car is up on 4 ramps. Any tricks to lift the engine enough to get the pan off while the tranny is out.
Very possible it is the oil pan gasket. But its definitely worth a shot to see if its that small cover. You can just replace the o-ring on your crank position sensor. You don't have to buy a new sensor. Easiest way to pull the oil pan is to support the motor up top and lower the K- member.
I was going to do mine but.............. My Corvette mechanic did mine for me and he had to lower the K-member.
