Default Deck Lid Lift Spring Mod (98-02 Firebird)

Back in the day, there was a site that had instructions and part number to install a stiffer deck lid spring. This assured that the deck would rise past the latching mechanism for those of us with heavier wing/spoilers like the Mecham wing on my ride. The old girl ain't getting any younger, and the lift spring has weakened and needs replaced. The original spring was available at ACE hardware stores, and I was wondering if any of you old guys have the instructions for the Deck Lid Lift Spring Mod lurking about in your old mod files.

Thanks in advance,

Darden

I replaced the spring with a stronger one from Home Depot. It was in a multi-pack and was about the same size. Some people piggy-back the spring.

That's exactly what I did on all my '99-'02 cars.

As far as instructions, none are really necessary, it's just a matter of hooking the spring to the existing spring.

Just an FYI to anyone reading, this mod won't work on a '98 car as they don't use a spring for this latch.

I just did mine last week, I bought a pack of springs from home depot and used the size Installuniversity recommended (5/8 spring 2.5" long)

Or 93-97 cars, which have never really had this problem. I'm honestly curious why they swapped to a less effective part for the later years, probably more of their penny-pinching.

You want to search for "helper spring"

I agree, the latch on my '98 works perfectly even at 21 years old. But my '99+ cars needed the "helper" spring when they were just a few years old. I have heard of some folks having issues with the earlier cars as well, maybe we've just been lucky.

Thank you all for the rapid replies! Looks like I'll be heading to Home Depot.

Sounds like several others can benefit from this...all the better!!

Regards to all,

Darden
