Default O2 Sensor Replacement

Here are the facts: “Service Engine Soon” light came on. OBD II reader gave a P135 error and specifics said that the Bank 1 Sensor 1 had problems. Ordered a new one and waiting for it to come in. When it does: 1) do I just change sensor and the dash light will go off or 2) change sensor and hook up OBD II reader and reset/delete the code? Any other information and guidance on this will be appreciated as this is the first time I do this. Seems simple enough but I don’t want to miss anything.

Thanks to all for any replies and instructions.

Sorry, this is on a 2000 Camaro SS with LS1, Kooks headers, LS6 intake, SLP cold intake. Not much else.

After you install it you can simply disconnect the battery to reset the code if you don't have a scanner.

All right, thank you very much. I did not know about disconnecting the battery to reset computer codes. I will do that instead of driving back to Auto Zone and borrowing their scanner.

Appreciate the info.

Just disconnecting the battery does NOT reset codes in the 4th Gen F-Body...there is a sequence you can research that involves pulling a couple of fuses under the hood, but it resets everything and the computer has to relearn everything, including things like idle speed with the AC compressor on and off, etc... Easiest thing to do is have a scanner clear the codes. You can even get a cheap one at Harbor Freight Tools that works fine for like $25-$35 is Advance won't clear it for you...

...it will eventually reset itself after the computer sees what it wants to see after so many driving cycles...

Yes, it does. Removing power to the PCM clears all active and history codes. I don't know what fancy "sequence" you're referring to, but there's only one fuse you have to pull to accomplish the same thing, which is the "PCM BATT" fuse. I'd love to see some documentation supporting your claim, though.

I don't know how long you've had your car, but it is common for cars with long tubes to throw O2 sensor codes because the sensor location is farther downstream and doesn't heat up to spec. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the sensor. After battling this for a while, I finally turned off the sensor codes to "Do Not Report".

In that case, the only way to assess O2 sensor performance is by datalogging.

Bought my ‘98 Z28 new, owned it now for over 22 years, and simply disconnecting the battery does not clear the codes in my ‘98...

After a quick search, this is the procedure to clear the codes & reset the PCM in 4th Gen OBD II F-Bodies if you don’t have a code reader/scanner to clear codes:
Turn key on, don't start car
Pull PCM BATT and PCM IGN fuses in eng compartment
Wait 5-10 min
Turn ignition off
Replace fuses

After doing this procedure, I usually let it idle for 5-10 mins with the AC off and then another 5-10 mins with the AC on so it can relearn the idle.

That makes no sense considering your procedure simply removes power from the PCM...

Well I didn’t come up with this procedure, it’s been around for years. I had an issue, simply disconnecting the battery didn’t clear the codes, I did a search and found this procedure probably 20 years ago, and it actually worked after simply disconnecting the battery didn’t. To show how long ago it’s been, I eventually bought AutoTap to monitor and clear codes, and now I just have a cheap handheld scanner from Harbor Freight to clear codes...

So bottom line, if you don’t have a way to clear codes, go ahead and try just disconnecting the battery and if it clears the codes, great, but if it doesn’t, try the method I posted to see if that solves it...
