Default Throttle Stuck

Hello All,
2001 Pontiac Trams AM Convert, 6speed WS6 with Traction Control
Read this thread - https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...l#post20532325

Maybe I am not searching with the right verbiage, but I am not having any luck searching for a solution for a stuck throttle.

Problem happened once Wednesday getting off the freeway to work. No other issue for the day. Then Thursday, after work the issue got worse. Throttle was constantly getting stuck open. I can borderline mitigate it shifting gears, but at a stop it revs straight up. On the Freeway, it is almost acting as if the Cruise Control is on and staying at cruise speed, though Cruise is off. I looked at the connections to the black box thing near the battery but did not see anything out of the ordinary. It is almost acting like a vacuum problem or sticky solenoid somewhere. I say vacuum, due to how it acts almost like the Cruise is on.

Can anyone direct to to a thread or option to resolve this issue?

Other then this issue, at 180k miles, she is still purring like a kitten.

Called local Chevy, they are no longer toucher cars older then 15 years, due to lack of available parts.

Thanks.

Check the throttle cable lever and make sure it opens and closes smoothly.

It moves smoothly, no issue at all. I have noticed I need to be driving at least 20 minutes before the starts to happen, and I have not been able to replicate in in the drive away. Busy day, did not get to take pictures Will be getting one tomorrow, of the PCV valve. I did have some work done a couple weeks ago, to replace the tension pullies. I do not remember the PCV valve being in the condition I saw it in. Again will post tomorrow.

Have someone hold the pedal to the floor and see how much if any, slack there is in the cable.

Question Maybe?

After 100 thousands miles and 22 years, that happened once on my GMC. About 8 years ago on a bow hiking hunting trip, traveled 90 miles with the cruise on at about 78 mph. The weather was below freezing with high humidity, at night the upcoming city lights where shinning straight up like lazer beams. I was planning to stop and fill gas so I took off the cruise control but nothing changed. So I kept driving and after about 10 miles, I am thinking that the ice that had formed melted on the throttle plate. Then the RPMs dropped and the throttle returned to nomal. Which would be strange because I still have the factory coolant lines to the TB?
So the moral of this story is, what was the weather conditions when this happened to you?
I live in ND, how cold does it get in Flordia?

The throttle has hung on my mustang before when I floored it real hard & fast abruptly. It had just enough slack that when I floored and it jerked the cable and the cable made a loop and it came out of the groove it rides and it got hung on the outside of the bell crank causing the throttle blade to get stuck open. I didn’t realize why it was hanging until I had someone floor it repeatedly rapidly while I watched it and I saw it coming out of its grove. The motor was off while I was doing this by the way. To remedy it I used some zip ties as spacers to take some slack out of the cable on the pedal end. New throttle cables are obsolete for that car so zip ties it is.

Something like this. The red line is the cable. Have someone floor it rapidly and see if the cable stays where it should.

When's the last time the throttle body has had a good cleaing or could it be there's some binding going on inside the throttle cable. Deposits can build up around the throttle blade causing them to stick.

TB Cleaned... Good Question.2
I had just started running Seafoam through the gas about a month ago, on third tank now. Started it, have my Ninja 650r, had ethanol crystals built up after sitting a year and I had to tear it apart and fix. I have a can of the Sea Foam Spray to do the TB, next to my desk
Why is is it, I dislocated a couple fingers and tore some abdominal muscles train some goalies.. and I am being a baby about the pain.
It is probably a good place to start.

It's been cold down here last month, morning in the high 30's low 40's.. after noon's, in the high 60's low 70's. Lets say you can compare that to a NY Winter in the teens.

I have to been able to replicate the issue in the drive way. Each time it has happen, has been in/at inconvenient times and location. I plan to pull over and stop and look at it next time. Been driving the truck that last week due to Dr Appt's I can not miss.

As long as the MAF sensor has been removed you can use carb cleaner or even brake cleaner to clean it. It's the shaft for the butterfly that gets gunked up and can start causing it to stick. I'd also spray same cable lube into each end of the throttle cable to keep it moving smoothly. Does the car have tranction control and cruise control? Might want to open up where the cables go and inspect. Won't hurt to spray cable lube there either.

Got unlazy after replying to you. Picked up some TB cleaner and cleaned her up. I do have some Motorcycle Chain lune, wondering if that be good enough for the Cable?

Thanks for the help.

Also might be good measure to remove the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve and give it a good cleaning. And clean the passage in the throttle body. Those can get sticky from soot build up and that will cause your idle to hang.

Believe it or not this silicon spray is real good at cleaning things made out of plastic like IAC’s. It’s a “dry lube” and it doesn’t leave a thick sticky film behind or anything like that. Gunk will run out and the valve will be lubed. I use it to clean and lube all sorts of stuff from guns to IAC’s. Safe on metal, plastic, rubber, etc.
It’ll clean a throttle body too, I’d probably ise something a little “stronger” for it. I might would spray the bell crank etc with the “RV” Spray after it was cleaned though. Clean the TB with it off the car. Since it’s off you might as well clean the MAF as well. Rubbing alcohol in a squirt bottle works better than “MAF cleaner” I think. You can use Q-tips but make sure they’re wet and be real gentle on the wires. You put a little more “finger grease” (less than “elbow grease”) with the Q -tip when you’re cleaning the bars. I realize you don’t have MAF problems, but while you’re at it…

Clean, Lube, Protect

The first think I would do is hook up a real time scanner and watch the TPS sensor as the revs come up.

Well... I was doing this. While I was there, I decided to clean the TB for the second time. As I was brushing it, this piece of plastic, same out.
I do not know if I should feel Dumb or this is just one of those damn things.
At least my 10 minutes drive life seems to be good.....
On a positive side, I got preventive maintenance done, that was probably LONG over due.
Thank you all for everyone's help.
