What is the correct starter replacement for an 01? The newer style. AC Delco preferred unless luck has been had with the oem brands.

generic Lester # 6492 will get you the heavier duty 11 tooth used on the 6.0 Liter LQ4 and LQ9 easy fit, looks the same, just slightly bigger diameter field case and bigger armature.
Delco oem 8000052 or 9000880

Is the heat shield needed? The one for the starter? I tossed mine a while ago by accident. This is a newer starter I had replaced (Longer bolt style) maybe about 7 months ago. Car isn't driven too much. Could this have prematurely failed? Battery tested fine. No oil near the contacts, cables look fine.
