Default A/C Problem

Well when I got home today and got out of the car I noticed a weird noise from under the hood, so I popped it open and there is a metal on metal rubbing sound coming from the AC compressor, and a burnt smell. I turned the AC off but it still made the sound (not as bad though), and I went to take the AC belt off and thats when I noticed how hot the clutch on the compressor was. The compressor itself wasnt hot at all, but the clutch assembly was extremely hot, so hot I couldn't put my hand within a half inch or so of it, and the belt was also REALLY hot.

So I know something is going out, do you guys think it is the compressor itself or just the clutch?

If I can't figure it out from your opinion it's to the shop I guess, but I'd prefer to just change the clutch myself if thats all it is.

EDIT: Oh and the air isn't getting cold at all, if that matters.

Thanks in advance

I've got the same exact problem. I haven't checked into it to far, but I think it's the clutch.

I hope thats all it is, clutches are cheap compared to a new compressor install. I just need to get it fixed since we've been reaching heat indexes of like 107 here in southern LA, driving with the windows down is nice but not in this kind of weather.

My compressor was making a sound and blowing hot air. The shop said it ran out of oil and burnt out. The clutch was working fine and i never got close enough to see how hot it was. The compressor was pretty noisy.

Even just looking at the preview text before I clicked the link and saw your whole post, my first thought was 'compressor clutch'

OK well thanks for the info guys, now the only other thing I need to know, can you even change these clutches seperately?

If so how hard is it and how much do they cost

Thanks!

The clutch can be replaced by itself, but it does involve removing the compressor from the car and using some special tools to dismantle things (might be possible to make do without the GM tools, I don't know).

The 98-02 LS1 AC compressor clutch is GM part number 6581515, aka AC-Delco #15-4685. List price is $66.98.

See that is really NOT what I wanted to hear

I was hoping it would be something I could do, but that definitely sounds like something I'll have to pay a shop for. So I'll probably be looking at $500+ here

Dang, that's not good... But if it's any consolation, the full compressor assembly (GM #1137028) lists for $723.30, so look on the bright side if it's only the clutch
