Usually this is a sign that motor gear is striped, replace the gear with a brass one from here http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headlightfix/index.htm

My passenger side headlight would making a loud grinding noise every time I would shut off the headlights. About a week ago I replaced the stripped-out gear in the headlight motor and replaced it with a brass gear and it now works perfect, no problems at all. Wasn't that hard to do either....

This is where I got gears for my Corvette headlights when they started acting up. http://www.rodneydickman.com/retail.html
There is also the free way to fix that. What you can do is disconnect the mechanism and then use the manual turn and move it 180 degrees. This will put a none stripped side of the gear to use without pulling the motor apart.
