Default Need an oil reccomendation please

It's time for an oil change and I'm thinking about using something other than the Mobil 1 10W-30 I always use.
My car is a 2001 Trans Am with close to 95,000 miles and it gets driven pretty hard. I live in the southern California desert and I work part time as a delivery driver so almost every day I'm driving 40+ miles in 100+ degree weather(113 today!). I also like to race a couple times a month.
What oil should I be using? Is there any oil that would be suitable for my driving conditions and that could also minimize piston slap?

i just started using AMS oil and drove from cali to colorado and burnt no oil. i like this oil a lot more than redlie or mobile one. i think if you want a change this would be a good way to go.

If you can find it at your local Autozone, the best choice would be German made Castrol Syntec 0w30. If you can't find it, then you could also try Castrol Syntec 5w40, or Mobil 1 5w40 or Royal Purple's Racing 41.

I don't think the Autozone here carries the German Castrol so I'll probably go with the Mobil 1 5w40. Can you please explain why 5w40 is better suited for my car than the 10w30? Thanks for your help

Mobil 1's 5w30 and 10w30 are on the bottom end of the 30wt range, so they aren't quite thick enough for a hard driven LS1. Castrol 0w30 is actually very close to a 0w40, so it's got a better HTHS number, which means the oil can handle stress and high heat much better. Another good choice in oils is Amsoil's new 5w40 formula.

I live in the boonies, aka 29 Palms Maybe I'll make a trip to the Autozone in Palm Springs, it's only an hour drive.

Okay, even the Autozone in Palm Springs doesn't have the German Castrol but they do have Mobil 1 5w40. Would it be worth the drive there to get the 5w40 or should I just buy some 5 or 10w30 from the Autozone here?

Valvoline High Mileage is the way to go for you. Anything over 80,000 miles, especially if you're going to be driving it in the heat- you need some thick oil man. If you want too, get some full synthetic: but for a high mileage engine, all you're going to be getting in return is better gas mileage (less drag) and itll last longer. Thats it. Valvoline, yes, is no Mobil 1 full synthetic, but if you race it only a couple times a month- but use it as a daily driver ESPECIALLY in the heat, you need some thick stuff. 10-30 or 10-40 is good. I go with Valvoline 10-30, adn all my friends do. And if you really want to spend $5.29 a quart for Full Syn. (I work at an Autozone) go for it man.

go with the Mobil 1 0W-40, thats what i use, and you should be able to find it at your autozone. It has a very good HTHS number, 3.6, which i believe is comparable to the german castrol 0w-30. I would go with that!
