A/C Compressor
Hey,
I just got word that my A/C compressor is leaking big time and needs to be replaced. They wanted $570 for the compressor and $80 for the accumulator. After labor we are talking $980+!!! Thats why I have left it for the past two years. Its a 2000 SS Camaro does anyone have any recomendations? What kind of power gain would I be looking at by removing the whole system? Im in Austin TX if anyone knows a good guy lemme know.
Thanks
Travis

i got a used one for les than $200 from someplace and pepboys put it i n for $80 bucks. Dumb part is that my compressor was fucked up and i didnt get the whole system flushed out or something so i still have no A/C. Don't you hate it when you tend to forget about **** until after all the work is done.

Don't waste your time on use AC parts. The front seal on the compressor will shrink from non use. When you charge it your going to loose most of the freon the first time and after that even with use it will 99% of the time still never hold. $570 for the comp is too high. You can get one from somewhere else for less. Even the brand new GM lists for just over $600. same with the drier. you cna get them for closer to 50 bucks. Yes labor will be extensive but if you shop around and maybe get teh parts yourself you could save 3-400 bucks or so.

I just replaced my accumulator (a must-do), orifice tube, and compressor (rebuilt) from Advanced Auto for $434. It's a simple remove and replace. Took all of a couple of hours. I was able to get into a nearby repair shop for a flush and recharge that afternoon. That cost $140. I was quoted about the same prices. It's some of the easiest stuff I've done.
Anytime you have a system opened for that long you need to replace your accumulator. Many web sites push for an inline filter. I just got the flush.

ok
Ill check around and see what I can get. Just curious if anyone knows what kind of performance gain if any I would see with taking the entire system out. ATX can get hot so the power gain would have to be signif!! Thanks for the help guys.
