Default Doing an Oil Change

Hey guys....well my oil light just came on over the weekend, so time to change the oil. I have 85k on my car(just bought it about 1000 miles ago.) The dealer said that it has only had regular oil in it. Not Synthetic. Is there anything I need to do special when I change it? I have Mobile 1 5w30 synthetic that Im going to put in.

Thanks, kurt

Changing the oil is actually easy on this car except you'll probably have to raise the car a little so you can wiggle underneath and get the screw out.
You'll have to reset the "Change Oil" light. This thread tells you how to do it.

If some leaks start, you might want to make a more gradual change over to synthetic (starting with a heavier weight and gradually working to the 5w-30), rather that just running synthetic all of a sudden.

LEAKS????/// Um....maybe I wont make the switch to Synthetic. My car has 85,xxx miles on it...but its in great condition. NO LEAKS, Doesnt eat or burn oil. Im worried now with the previous posts about leaks. I have a new house/garage/driveway. I dont want leaks all over the place.

It's not a sure bet that it will leak. It is a risk though. Some people go straight to synthetic and have no problems with leaks whatsoever. However, some do form leaks. But, that is because of switching to a much lighter weight oil rapidly. If you want to switch to synthetics, do it gradually like I said, starting with a heavier weight and moving lighter each month.

Should be good. Try that first, if you're going to switch to synthetic at all. It can't hurt to try it out. And if no leaks for a few weeks... move on down

I was in the same position a few months ago. I had 97000 on mine and bought it used from a lot so don't know what kind of oil to use. I put in mobil 1 5w30 and have had no leaks. It is about time to change it again. I was thinking of using 0w40 but can't find it around here for some reason. I probable will stay with the 5w30.

The default setting for synthetic oils, in modern cars, in 2005, is "no leaks."

You may get the tiniest bit of weep or creep, but you should not get any actual leaks.

Make the change to synthetics. You won't be sorry.
