Default Oil Pressure at 0 psi??????

I have an 2000 ss, not a daily car, went to start the car and no oil presure?WTF? So I call around for a oil pump and ordered a LS6, someone said change the oil and filter. so I did, then I started the car and it had oil pressure, Car runs great, so I start the car after it cools down and no oil pressure! again WTF, hit the gas and oil pressure returns and is back to normal?

Do I have a bad pump?Bad o-ring? What should I do? I have an extrenal oil pressure guage that reads the same as the stock one. Car runs perfect after you hit the gas, could the spring in the pump be bad?? I'm pulling my hair out.

When you say no oil pressure, you mean 0, zip, nada or very low pressure?? When I changed oil for the first time I put on a Fram oil filter and noticed a marked decrease in oil pressure. After some research I went for a KN oil filter and my pressure just went up.

Could it have anything to do w/ the oil sending unit behind that intake manifold?

O psi, the check guages light comes on, the car has 2 different oil sending units and both read O none, But when I hit the gas it comes back and reads 40 psi at idle

If you havn't gone into that motor lately it's likely NOT the oil pump itself. Check sender, electrical connectors, wiring harness. Don't forget the connector at the IP and the IP too.

The problem with the 98 - 00 pumps is the relief valves - yours is probaly weak/sticking, do not run the engine any more, change the pump.

On Vettes when the sender goes bad it reads very high(analog pegged at 80 and digital at 129). Mine was like that when I bought the car, and then after having a new engine put in it worked for about 3 months and quit yet again.

I think the "Official GM" designation is actually IPC. Instrument Panel Cluster. If an engine actually had "0" oil pressure it would self-destruct after a very few miles which I don't think is happening with the motor. It sounds more like a false "0" reading if the motor is still running and not eating itself alive. A little work with a DVM is in order here. In order for the relief to stick open several things have to happen first. One is that the pressure had to have gone over the rating of the spring that holds the piston in the pump closed. The engine would have to have a restriction or something else like one to cause the pressure to go to Max like that or else the spring was weak or defective. Then the piston had to stick in the open postion because of a burr or a piece of trash wedged in the bore. If your luck is bad enough to have all those domines line up in a straight row don't play the lottery any time soon.

So you are saying you have zero pressure on the mechanical gauge as well??? If so you've got a bad pump, 98's, 99's, and 00 F-bod were bad about this.

changing the pump sat, bought a ls6 from speed inc. The only has 46k on it, I moved the car to the other side of the garge, o psi at start up and rev the motor up to 3k and oil psi returns to normal. My ss has 2 oil pressure guages, and both read 0.

I used to have a Grand National that exhibited a similar thing, but it would go down to 5 psi, not zero. I was told by the GN guys that this was common when you had really large main bearing clearances. I never worried about it and the engine was fine. It never got to zero, though.
