Default Rear differential

My rear passenger side wheel squeaks. Thought it was a wheel bearing, but I had them check it when I had it aligned and they said it was good. They said they thought it was my differential. I dont' know much about the differential, but it really doesn't make sense because I only hear it comming from the passenger side. Any ideas?

Without knowing how it sounds it could be the diff which is solved with a 5 dollar can of additive or the pins in the caliper need to be tighened.

Have to say when it squeaks. Under what conditions, all the time or intermittent?

Also is it truly a metallic squeak? Bad diffs make lower pitched grinding noises or clicking, no so much squeaks. Squeaks are probably suspension or brake related.

It is a high pitched intermittent squeak. I took the tire off and there doesn't seem to be any space between the brakes and the disk. The disk on both sides feel very hot after driving. Is this normal?

Yes it's normal for the disc to be too hot to touch. If the brakes were dragging it would be extremely hot, it would stink to all hell, and that particular wheel would get lots more dust on it than the others.

If the squeak happens when turning, check to see if the outside of the rotor is rubbing the caliper. It will look like there is alot of room, but when you load the system up in a corner things move around and it can rub. You'll see a worn spot on the outside of the rotor. This is alot more likely if you used aftermarket rotors, sometimes they are just a hair bigger in diameter.

If it happen on bumps then spring seats and bushings are your next thing to look at.

Are you positive its in the wheel? I thought I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be my tire jack rattling around.

Checked the spare and jack, tightened them down. It's definitely the wheel. It squeaks on each rotation.

Does the squeaking speed up with increasing wheel speed? you might try jacking up the rear of your car and running it in gear. I did this and noticed that one wheel didn't want to turn. The posi kept kicking in and having to make it turn. Turns out I had bent an axle on that side.

Some thing happened to me with only one wheel turing when i jacked up the rear. When the tire does turn it wobbles like no other. Sad thing is that i just got the rear end from the junkyard. Hopefully only an axle.
