i press the release button 5 or 6 times to get it to come open, then, once open those arms barely hold it up. those could need replacing but that wouldnt cause it to not open huh?

I have the same problem with my 02 and tried every fix that I've heard works and none of them do. I didn't want to hijack your thread so I just started my own. I'll be keeping an eye on both threads someone has to to know why we have this issue. I have to hit my remote 3 or 4 times while pulling up on the hatch to get mine open.

bump to this, also having hatch problems on a 98 t/a...

I used to have to push down and pull up on the hatch to get it to fully release and pop up, but now it just gets totally stuck sometimes and I need to keep forcing it.

Do you guys have this issue when you open it with the button on the dash? Or with the key? Or is it just an issue when using the remote?

My '98 hatch release works perfect. My '00 used to have issues though.

Let us know how it works with the key. It'll be interesting to see if that makes a difference.

I wonder if something needs to be lubed with the release assembly? That would explain the sticking issue.

My key works fine. It is only when I use the remote or the yellow interior release that mine does not open. I actually have to pull up on mine while hitting the remote 3 or 4 times before it will open. I've given up and just use the key.

Good info.

Seems that for some reason the release mechanisim isn't as strong when engaged with the key fob or the interior button. Some lube might still be the answer, or maybe a bad electrical connection?

If it opens with the key, then the problem is in the electrical release mechanism/solenoid. 1. Check for a good ground. 2. Could be a weak solenoid, replace it.

My 98 with almost 140k works... <knock on wood>

I didn't realize the 98 doesn't have the spring, I thought it did. I never looked at mine, I just assumed.

I have to pull up on mine while I hit the button... I tried adjusting the hatch up with the little rubber stoppers, but it still doesnt pop open as it should. still no solution except if I want to replace the mechanism...
