like i stated in other oil threads....i worked part time with some guys on lsx engines during college, we found consistanly that on newer lower mileage engines, the internal seals, and parts would wear faster with 40 then older engines that had less resistance and wouldnt wear as much.....40 is a good oil, but certain brands of 30 will work just fine

For me it's either GC 0W-30 or Amsoil 5W-30. Although, I do mix in a 1 quart of Rotella T 15-W40 (or 5W-40 synthetic), 6oz of Valvoline SynPower oil treatment, & 3oz of AutoRx.

amazing how many people continue to vote mobil 1 5W-30

so many uneducated people think it's good stuff. get your oil analyzed. you'll find it's junk in the LS1 compared to others.

i just got my hands on some M1 5W-40 turbo diesel oil. this will go in next change, and i will do a head-to-head analysis between GC 0W-30 and mobil 1 5W-40. remember, mobil 1 5W-40 is above and beyond better than xW-30 in EVERY WAY. 30 weight mobil 1 is garbage.

I was told by an oil expert that ALL synthetic oils are mandated in the US to be exactly the same, weight for weight, as far as how good they are.

One other thing to consider when using synthetic oil, (or even conventional oil for that matter) the 3,000 mile oil change interval is only required to keep the oil companies rich.
Almost any motor oil is good for 3 times that mileage, with synthetic oil being good for 5-8 times the (US) recommended oil change intervals.

Thirty years ago, oil companies and vehicle manufacturers have increased their drain recommendations significantly. But despite the improvement in motor oils made during the past 30 years, and despite the fact that the same oils are used in Europe with much longer drain intervals, oil companies here in the U.S. are still promoting 3,000-mile drain intervals.

According to a feature article in the March issue of Lube's n Greases magazine, that represents the "unneeded production of 300 million to 400 million gallons of engine oil" every year! Who pays for all that unneeded motor oil? It's the motorists who change oil more often than necessary. And who profits from producing all this unneeded motor oil? The oil companies who continue to recommend frequent oil chages!

The article was written by David McFall, past president of the American Petrolium Institute (API) and Automotive Editor for Lubes 'n Greases magazine. He minces no words in questioning the motives of oil companies, asking why their oils can be used for 10,000 miles in European vehicles while being recommended for only 3,000 miles here in the United Stated. Most of us already know the answer to that question. The oil companies don't want to see their market cut by at least half by extending drain intervals. They'll stick to their 3,000-mile drain intervals as long as the American consumers will keep buying into it, at an estimated annual cost of $1.5 billion, according to McFall.

Oil specifications and drain recommendations in Europe are controlled by the vehicle manufacturers, with the oil companies having less influence than here in the U.S. Because of higher costs, Europeans are more careful about wasting energy. They are also very environmentally aware. They would not put up with the cost, waste, and environmental effects of changing their oil every 3,000 miles. They are very aware of the improved performance synthetic motor oils provide.

not even close. somebody lied.

seriously, if someone claims to be an "oil expert" and tells you this information, never take them seriously again because they have absolutely no clue. i probably know more about oil than this "expert"

amsoil 10w-30 cured the piston slap in my t/a. I switched from mobil 10-30

10 it the weight of the oil at cold temps to lubricate as quickly as possible. oil actually gets thicker as it heats up and thats how you get two dif weights out of one oil. Car Craft has a very good article over this topic in their current issue wih the boss 302 on the cover.

what do you mean more noise than ever? when? at startup? you realize engine noise has nothing to do with engine wear, right? you could very well be making a bit more noise but wearing a lot less. do an oil analysis. you can't judge an oil without a UOA. mobil 1 30 weights are junk, and if you're going to use that, expect your engine to wear a lot more than with GC.
