Maybe just a bad belt?
That's happened to me before. I bought a GM belt once that started shreading after about 6-8K miles. Never had that issue before, and never since. And I'm still using GM belts. Just got a bad one that time. Maybe the same thing happened to you.....

Usually when a tensioner goes bad, it'll start to toss the belt off, and if it's not holding proper tension you'll notice voltage being low at idle and the power steering won't provide the usual amount of assisitance.
If the tensioner pulley is going out it'll squeak.
First thing I'd do is just to get another belt and see what happens.

yeah, i dont have any of those problems or symptoms, ill throw a new belt on and see what happens....you wouldnt believe how much goodyear wanted for their 90k maintenance plan,(including fuel filter, replace belt, tire rotation, ect) 600+, i couldnt believe it, 100 just for the serp belt. i feel bad for the saps that get sucked into that, what it takes 3 sec to put a new belt on, and they are going to charge an hour of labor!?!

A belt change on an LS1 car could be performed by a retarded 4 year old child.
$600 for a fuel filter, belt, and tire rotation on your car is well past insanity. That's like $50-60 worth of parts and $500+ in labor. Even the dealerships aren't that bad!
I don't even have a lift, and I could still knock that job out in less than an hour.
