Rear Axle fluid

What kind of gear fluid do you use and how much? Does it make a big difference in drivability/smoothnes?

Didn't change anything as far as driveability, but I went to Mobile 1 at 18,000 miles and again about 50k (I've changed it twice). When GM did the high speed Corvette ZR1 testing at Talledega, they found that switching to Mobile 1 (and a few others) kept them from melting down rear ends every 15-20 minutes of high speed running. It probably needs changed anyway, and it can't hurt.

2 quarts of a 75w-90 GL-5 synthetic gear lube will do.

In a Torsen equipped car, no. GM added it in some cases to remove a "rusty screw" sound from the diff (I've never heard it out of mine), but it won't hurt anything on a torsen to run it without additive. If you have a car with a clutch type limited slip (Eaton, Auburn, etc), you'll probably want to use the additive.

I used RP 75-90. It was fairly cheap at like $10 bucks a quart

I used Mobil 1 synthetic and the GM additive in my 98.

Per my owner's manual, in my '98 I used 80W90 GL-5 standard lube plus the GM limited slip additive. Works great, no noise at all.
