Default Very bad noise!

Ok, i was going to get on it at a corner on my way home and i herd this horrible bang. I felt it come up through the shifter and my whole consol shook. I have a 97 z28 auto. Anybody know what this could be? It scared the ever living hell out of me!

Sorry, when i was coming home, i got on it and it made the bad banging noise. When i pulled over i could smell something burning and it wasn't tires. When i left i went up through all the gears and every thing seemed ok. It still drives alright, its just everytime you try to take off remotely fast, it will make that noise and you can feel it in the shifter and in the whole console. My buddy who is a mechanic said it could possible be the tourque arm. Does that sound right? I am not a mechanic by any means.

it sounds like your tranny mount. My auto i used to have did that once. The transmission jumps up and can hit the transmission tunnel when the mount is broken, that's why the banging comes from right under the console. And it only bangs when you punch it, you can drive around like a grandma and it wont act up.

is a tranny mount easier so replace than an engine mount? I had a buddy look at the engine while i slowly eased into it and the back of the engine started to raise up quite a bit. Is ther eany heavy labor in replacing the tranny mount? You don't have to pull anything off do you?

Its simple to change the tranny mount, but for a do it yourself project, it took me about an 1 hour or a little less.

I change tranny mounts with my hands tied behind my back... in my sleep... in ten minutes or less.

Seriously though, just put the car up on jackstands or ramps, put a block of wood on top of your jack, raise the tranny slightly. Unbolt the crossmember, unbolt the mount, replace mount with Energy Suspension. Reverse procedure.

Pat yourself on the back for a job well done...

I just hope i didn't break any engine mounts. is that a likely possibility? How much does a new mount cost?

dude, i promise you its the tranny mount. i have had to replace mine too. on a load it can grind and shake and when it shifts it pops loud as crap. i had mine replaced at a shop, and it wasnt too bad. i tend to remember the exspesive repairs and i cannot recall this one.

i would have done this myself, but i work 40 hours a week and go to FSU full time. so paying a shop makes more sense sometimes.

I think he was asking if it were possible if he could have also broken an engine mount due to the tranny mount being broken.

To answer your question 97camarozguy, I doubt it.

any idea on what a new one would cost, I can't imagine them being too expensive.

Any local auto parts house should have them or be able to get them for $35 to $50. I think that I paid $45 for my Energy Suspension at the local speed shop. Haven't broken that one... yet.

i bought mine for $20 off byunspeed, but i think autozone carries them for not much more, it is the same mount for 1958-up GM trannies. i replaced mine for the first time, took little more than 20 minutes to do on jackstands...
