Default Amsoil 5W-40

I just found someone local who sells this stuff and I am going to do an oil change tomorrow. I have an Ac Delco filter and a K&N. I haven't decided which I am going to use on this oil change but I will be going from Mobil 10W-30 to this. I am going to get an oil analysis done on the Mobil and again on the Amsoil after 6 or so months.

If I were you I would go no higher than 5W-30 Amsoil. I actually use 0W-30 Amsoil in my car.

You are going to get all kind of answer for your question my.002 is.
Stick with a good Synthetic 10w-30 and a good filter Wix or Ac and you will be fine and it will only cost you about 45.00 per oil change

I already bought the Amsoil 5w-40 and alot of people on here recommend it for this engine. I did not like the Mobil 10w-30. My mechanic said Mobil 1 was too thin for this engine also. I am going to use the ac filter. Patman recommended the 5w-40 Amsoil. I haven't heard any bad things on here anywhere about it. Thanks for your input. I will post my oil analysis on here with both oils. If I don't like the Amsoil I will just go back to buying 10w-30 amsoil. I only pay 7.00 a qt for it and I get the filter for $2.00 because I work at Autozone.

I'm on my second interval of running the Amsoil 5w40, and it seems good to me. I still need to send my last sample in for analysis, but I'll get to it Personally, I use that weight and run a K&N long filter (the HP 2006). Haven't blown my engine up yet, and I spin it to 6300 on occassion, even on the stock valve train.

That depends on the season, miles on your engine, stock or internally modded engine, how hard you push the engine, and your location (average temps). If she is in a somewhat warm/moderate climate, which she is, (or one that is warm in spring/summer/fall), there is NO PROBLEM with Amsoil or Redline 5W-40. In fact, in those conditions it is preferred, even in pure stock LSxes.
For my next change in the WINTER, I will go with Amsoil Series 3000 (5W-30) or Redline 5W-30. For the summer I use one of those two companies' 5W-40. Most on here (and www.bobistheoilguy.com) have determined that the Series 2000 (0W-30) Amsoil is too thin ( cSt's at 100*), in a warm climate, for Lsxes with any kind of mileage (> 15,000) on them, or internally modded ones.

Thanks dailydriver for the input. I drive very light to moderate. It never gets really cold here. Very rarely sees 32 in the winter. It does get really humid and hot in the summer like high 90's sometimes. I am not sure if I will just run the 5w-40 in the summer too. Patman said it was fine to do so.

Anyway I just finished the change and the oil pressure came up to 50 psi when reved to 1500 rpms and with it a little warm at idle it ran 40-45. It came down to 35-37 psi after full warm up and reved up a little and then let idle. That is what it was with M1 10w-30 after 5500 miles. No change there. I will keep an eye on it. I thought the amsoil would run a little higher on the oil pressure. I will see what it does when the car is completely cold with the higher idle.

Valve train noise is much quieter. Piston slap can still be heard. (I know that is going to always be the case)

Run the AC PF61 filter on it (or another long filter from Wix or K&N). It helped the pressure on mine, along with the GC 0/30. Run 6 qts. also.

I think the pressure I have is fine. What pressures do you run with the long filter?

your mechanic is correct. mobil 1 10W-30 is a poor choice for the LS1. too thin. amsoil 5W-40 is supposed to be a good choice. 5W-40 is a better performer than the 30 weights in the LS1, on paper, at least.

im running castrol syntec 5w-40 right now!! i guess its doing great, no pinging, or oil consumption. im also running an ac delco oil filter also. no problems.

Yes, you should be just fine with that in the summer as well. If not, you can switch to Redline 5W-40 which has a higher 100* cSt than the Amsoil, as well as much more (the current Amsoil formulation has NONE, according to their techs) "good" moly and zinc added to it's ester base stocks (not sure if the Belgian Castrol, Motul 300V, Silkolene, and Cosworth 5W-40s are higher 100* cSts as well). I know some don't like to go switching back and forth between different synthetic oil brands (especially with different base stock chemistries, i.e.; PAOs vs. esters), but ONE time is not going to hurt anything. I would only do this if the Amsoil turns out to be too thin, though.

I believe the cct of the Amsoil 5w-40 is 13.7 which they are saying the ls1 likes 12-13. I haven't found anything in between these numbers. I was trying to find something I could just stick with so the engine would get use to it. The Amsoil 10w-30 is like a 10.7 cct. The mobile I was using was like 10.1 in the 10w-30.

I use Amsoil Series 3000 5w30 and i like it alot. It stays clean way longer than the Mobil 1 that i used to use.

It is really cold here today like 30 which is not normal. I am not sure about the oil yet. The piston slap (I guess it is what I am hearing) is really loud to me. It is quiet up top just loud listening by the tires or just standing back and listening. When I rev it it is quieter. I guess the oil doesn't have anything to do with the piston slap? I was really wanting the noise to be reduced. I hope the 5w-40 will be okay for now until I figure out what I will do next oil change.

Does it matter that this Amsoil oil 5w-40 is not SAE but instead API???

When it's cold like that any of the 5W-40s will sound louder on startup (than almost ANY of the 0/5W-30s), but the Amsoil has one of the lowest 40* cSts (as well as a medium range 100* cSt), out of ALL of the 5W-40s out there, so you will be OK. Just allow more driving warm up time before "getting on it". By comparison, the Redline 5W-40 has almost a 15 point higher 40* cSt!! (I don't have the specs on the BC, Motul, Silkolene/Fuchs, or Cosworth to compare.)

As far as the certifications go; I would rather an oil company dump their cash into R&D to make a SUPERIOR product, than to hand it to an organization to get a "stamp of approval" (the API "starburst" cert. supposedly costs many millions of $$$$$$$$$$$!).

Yes, this stuff is one very "stout" oil. The only issues that would sway me towards the Redline are that Redline has NO V.I. improvers added, and also it has a high moly/zinc content in the additive package. Some say the high (12) TBN of the Series 3000 could possibly cause problems in a gasoline engine, but I don't necessarily believe that. The Redline has a TBN (total base number) of 8, which the RL techs claim stays in spec longer than others, but who knows without numerous and intensive oil analyses comparing the two??

FWIW I have been running mobil 1 0w40 then Amsoil 5w40 ever since my first oil change post re-ring in early '04.

I track the car so I want the 40 wt oil in there as it stickst to parts better as temps climb.

Whoever said it will flow worse when cold is wrong... when cold it performs like a 5wt oil. The first number is the cold viscosity rating. When cold a 5w40 and a 5w30 will perform the same, when hot the 5w40 will be thicker.

My idle seems to be rougher since the oil change. It isn't missing or anything just seems like it shakes a little more. It is cold here now. Maybe after is warms up it won't do that. Anyone else noticed their car running different when they changed brands or weights?
