Default Oil Change Light

so the other day i got in my car and the Change Oil light was on - never a good sign, especially since im not due for a change for another 1000 miles. i thought it would have something to due with the cold, but my car sits in a 55 degree garage, so it's not that cold. The light goes off around the time the oil temp gets to 200-210. Even when the oil is hot and i shut it off, then turn it back on, the light still comes on for a min. or 2 before dissapearing. Has this happened to anyone before? Maybe i need a new filter... not for sure.

The PCM doesn't calculate when the light comes on strictly by mileage, it takes into consideration the weather and along many other things how you've been driving (lead foot or granny jones).

+1 to Slammed99s10

It is a calculated value. It goes off in a minute on purpose.

Change your oil and reset!

i'll reset the comp. but i've only got about 1750 miles on this change of oil, i was just planing on finishing it out and then when it runs out (prolly around march-april) have it changed to mobil 1 synthetic. If the light is really coming on b.c there is a prob. with this oil then there's no sense to sit around and let it damage my engine everytime i drive. I've been driving same as ever on this change, not too hard on er. I'll reset the comp. but if it comes on again i'll get it changed. Thanks fellas

This exact thing has been happening to me since it turned cold. I've only put 900 miles on my gc0w30, so i was planning on ignoring the light for another 4000 miles at least

The low oil level sensor in the pan and the GM oil life system (change oil light) are two separate things. Did you reset the oil life system at the last change? If so just reset it by turning the key to run, then depress the gas pedal 3 times - or the method in the owners manual. I change mine by mileage, takes WAY too long for the change oil light to come on for me. Don't reset the PCM, just the light.

Yeah i guess what happened with mine is that i changed my oil and reset the light. 3000 later the light came on and i reset it. At 5000 i changed my oil, but forgot to reset the light. SO 1000 into the next change the light came back on.

Just weird that the light comes on and turns off randomly.

What does it say? Everything should light up for a bulb check when the key is turned to the run position. On mine both the "low oil" and "oil change" lights are amber and on the left side. Might be low coolant? Don't know where that is on the 98/99?

That red light in the upper left corner is low coolant light. Mine does it when it's really cold as well, but my coolant levels are fine... no idea why it comes on.

Could possibly be air in the system, or a faulty radiator sensor on the pass side of the radiator...........
