Default What do you use for ramps/jacks?

Kinda a newb question, as I am, but I haven't run across this as a discussion issue. Probably cause most people on here are such pros!

As a fairly new F-body owner, I was wondering if any of you guys had any innovative ways of ramping or lifting your car with the low clearance.

I'm not talking if you have a hook up and a lift at a local shop, but I'm looking for the best/safest/cheapest way to do maintanance and on the underbody. Rhino ramps from Walmart with 2 x 12 boards is what I've been told? Not only to learn, but I'd bet some of you guys have some really crazy ideas too (post some pics if so!).

Lots of guys use the Rhino ramps. I just use some foot long 2x4s and 4x4s. I line them up and drive up on the 2x4s first, then the 4x4s. That way I had plenty of room to get my jack under the car. I'm cheap and these were leftover from some projects around the house.

I use rhino ramps...but I need to get new ones since I was pulling the fiancee's car onto them( with a very very touchy gas pedal and a front wheel drive). Well you probably guess what happened....gave it alittle too much gas and spun the ramps back under the car. Since no damaged happened to the car it was pretty funny to see the look on her face when she saw what i have done The ramps ended up getting about a 3 deep cut in them when the came down on them. So anyway be careful with a front wheel drive.

****, I need to drive my car on 2x4s just to get it on Rhino ramps in the front.

If I'm putting the car up on all 4s, I'll use the ramps in the rear after putting the front on jacks.

I had the same thing happen to me once, but it wasn't with a FWD car. It was my WS6. I figured out that this can happen on an incline (like my driveway) if you try to back onto the ramps going uphill (or pull forward going up hill on a FWD car). If you want to put the drive wheels (be it RWD or FWD) on the ramps, you need to make sure the ground is either level or you're moving in a downhill direction. Going uphill = wheel slip and ramps under car.

FWIW, I use the Rhino ramps all the time for my FWD Bonneville and Monte, and never had a problem.

I'm a little paranoid working under a car, so I have a 4 ton floor jack, and four 6 ton jack stands. I have to drive up on some 2"X12" blocks to get the floor jack under the car.

I use a 2.5Ton Floor Jack and jack stands if I'm working on my ride at home. If I need to do some extensive work underneath the car then I goto a DIY shop (a few minutes away from where I live) that is equipped with a car hoist.

I actually feel safer with the ramps over jack stands.

Same here with the exception of the ramps. I just use one 2x4 for the driver's side. Once the driver's side is lifted up I have no problems getting the right up.

Since my car is still as stock height, I have no issue using a 2-ton floor jack to lift the car. If I'm leaving the tires on, I jack the car up and slide the ramps underneath. I had an incident with driving my Z34 up on the ramps once and I refuse to do it anymore. If the tires are coming off, I just put it on jack stands. I only have 2 stands so it can't go up on all 4s if the tires are coming off.

I use a floor jack under the K member and then lower it onto Rhino ramps. The ramps moved once on me and that was enough. I trust the ramps more than jack stands, but I have a pair just in case. If its on the ramps block BOTH back wheels for your own saftey. I just roll off the ramps when done.

How do you mean they moved on you?

I spoiled myself and got the cool low clearance jack from craftsman, but i still use the rhinos when i have my winter rims on, my summer rims hang off way too much for comfort.

A pair of ol' metal ramps and some 2x4's to roll up on them. Or, put it on the blocks and slide the floor jack underneath, then have several sets of jack stands.
