Default Need Help Quick!

I just changed my oil and this time I used the mobil 1 oil filter. Well the ******* filter had a bad O-ring seal on it and when I put the 5 1/2 quarts or oil in it and started it up the oil started going everywhere. I turned it off after about 5 seconds of no oil pressure. The question is I have to go and get more oil but this is my only car at the moment I have about a quart and half on standby that I can use but I am wondering how much oil is left in the pan. I figure there should be at least a quart or so because the oil filter is at the top part of the pan right. The bottom of the pan should hold about 3 quarts roughly so would I be okay to throw 1 1/2 quarts of oil in there and then run down to the parts store and get some more or what?

NeverMind situation just got much worse. When I tightened the filter down and filled it upwith whatever I had left it blew the oring right out of the oil filter. This is not the gasket on the ring through it sits up inside where the oil filter screws in. I cannot get the gasket back up in there though the ******* hole is to small. Is this gasket glues on or something what do I need to do to fix it. Please help.

You sure it's not the gasket from the old filter?

im betting you have 2 gaskets on there. The filter should juts seat up to the metal block. Only seal should be on your oil filter if im not mistaken.

Thinking the same thing...does the old filter have a gasket on it?

I just looked and it is from the old filter. Well I guess that answers why the ******* thing blasted oil everywhere. The only thing is I don't know how much oil is in it so I think I will wait until the family comes home tomorrow and use another car to get more oil. How much damage do you think was done to my motor. I fired it up twice but each time no longer than about 5 seconds. It started really sounding bad the 2nd time. This sucks I have never had this happen before and I don't know what could cause it. Now my entire garage floor is caked in oil. Scratch it off as another shitty weekend I guess.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck....but always check to see if the old gasket came off with the old filter. I always take a rag and wipe down the surface for the new filter just incase. Don't run the car anymore until everything is tight and more oil is put in....keep an eye on the oil pressure and abort if anything sounds suspicious. I wish you GOOD LUCK!!

Check your internal filter media for any metal debris after you get it running to be sure there is no bearing debris unless there is something knocking downstairs after you get it full of oil.

Well I got it put back together. It looks like the old gasket on the old oil filter somehow glues itself to the block. Normally I check these kinds of things but I overlooked it this time. Hey on a good note though because of this I was able to track down more GC 0W-30 at a brand new autozone that just opened. Lucky Me! When I fired her up she built pressure up to 50PSI at idle. I let her run for a few minutes and I didn't hear any knocking or anything. I drove it this morning and everything seems to be fine. I guess I dodged the bullet on this one and now I just need to get all the freaking oil off the floor.

You will be fine, there is usually enough oil film to handle oil starvation at idle with no issues.

Always check to make sure the old gasket came off and make sure you are using a quality filter. In all of my years I have never seen a filter gasket come off of a old filter.

Update!

After driving my car around for about a week I have noticed that the oil pressure seems to be a little low. It will idle right about 35PSI at idle and will not really go over about 45PSI unless I stomp on it. Now I am using 0W-30 GC so that maybe why it is a little low. Now when it is cold and I start it up the damn thing has almost 60PSI at idle. I hope everything is okay the pressure does go up like it is supposed to and everytime I switch gears the pressure jumps up a little bit and then comes back down when it is back in gear.

Mine sits at 45-50 at idle and when i get on it it goes up to around 60 and if cold 70. When its warm it sits at little below 45.

If you went to a thinner oil (what were previously running?), expect lower oil pressure.
