Default Service Engine Light

I own a 99 z28 with 74k miles and my service engine light came on yesterday. I went to auto zone and had them read the code and they said I had 2 codes saying I was rich on cylinders 1&2. The car seems to run fine little rough idle and when I floor it I get a Lil cloud of black smoke. What I need to know is what should my first course of action be ??? what would you start checking first ?

Can you post the actual codes? Not sure they gave you the right explanation.

OK, sounds like P0172 and P0175. Read through www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic8885.php Pay particular attention to the diagnostic for throwing both codes. It's pretty detailed and assumes you have a scan tool but you might find something. Hope it's something easy....

I believe the term "Banks" is referring to each side. Bank 1=cylinders 1,3,5,7 (drivers side) and bank 2=2,4,6,8 (pass side). This code is thrown by your O2s that meter your exhaust.

Just a little clarification.

Bank 1 = drivers side

Bank 2 = passengers side

Moving to General Maintenance....

Sounds like a cat problem. Your rear O2s may be telling you that you have too much unburnt fuel passing through.

Check and clean your air intake ducts. Replace the air filter. Check the maf for obstruction and proper installation. Change the oil. Check the connector and wiring at the MAF.

Something else you can look at is make sure the maf is clean, especially if you're running an oiled filter.
