Default Knock Sensor: How to tell a good one?

Hey guys, I have been throwing a P0327 Code since I bought this freakin car, and I've finally gotten into troubleshooting it, after realizing, oh hey, I'm losing a lot of timing.

The car is pulling a constant 4 degrees at ANYTHING over 60% throttle, which means lean VE tables and all that crap.

I dug in and popped off the intake (snapped the oil pressure unit too!) with a friend, and the knock sensor's sure look rusted out.

I got a pair of new ones from a buddy that had some, and he claims one of them is bunk.

I can't figure out how to tell which is which. The nominal resistance is 93-107kohms, and I got one at 99.3 and one at 100.3.

I guess the proper way is to hook em up?

Anyone got a good idea? I'm going with this site as a bit of a guide, just curious about practical applications...

That looks like a great guide for for OBDII systems.

You didn't say whether you're working on OBDI or II.

I don't know enough about Firebirds to tell what year you have, but if you're working on OBDI, try http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#knock_sensor

There's also pertinent information for OBDII, but that other site looked even better.

Yeah, proper way would be to hook them up, snap the intake back on and clear the codes ....check to see if they come back up again after some drive time. That would be what I've done anyways,...knock sensors have been a consistent pain in the *** for me also, just replaced a set in the Z28 today.

What year is your car?

The 98s had different sensors that have been known to cause the 4 degrees of knock problem.

Well, if you dont want to tear the intake off again, just get some new ones, to eliminate the guesswork, and be done with it, that's what I did just last week...

Damn I just did mine two weeks ago. I had a P0327 code I reset it with a cheap code reader and it was fine, but I had to hook up hptuners to be sure, and it had the same code pending. Before I pulled the intake I ohmed them out. The front said 33k ohms which explained the P0327 (front KS).
I ordered two GM sensors, wire harness, and intake gaskets. Also sealed the rubber plugs with silicone as instructed in a TSB GM put out, this will keep water from getting in again.

Just did this too, my front sensor was a pile of rust. Cutting EGR plates this afternoon to finish it up.

Just did 'em on a friends 5.3 in his silverado-took me about and hour and a half to swap em out, both were swimming in a mud/water/rust stew, and another friend that followed him when he was "fording the river" has codes for the same issue, at least i get free beer out of the deal...

Replaced sensor, and NO MORE PULLED TIMING.

Now I just have to get the PC reprogrammed, and we're good to go. (as fast as stock!)

w00t.

Now I just need to nail down the right bank precat o2 sensor.

Tell it a knock knock joke and if it answers shes ok. On a more serious note. Just leave the intake off plug in the sensors and turn the key on and if one of them is dead it will throw a dtc.

I didn't want to do that because I figured the fuel pump might prime. That's a good solution though.

No it won't. I had a dead one, reset the code and the light stayed off for several driving cycles.
Then I checked with hptuners and it had a code pending.
This link will tell you what sets the dtc.

If it's dead dead it will set a code KOEO KS open circuit. If it's going "deaf" that is the procedure the pcm uses to determine it.
