Default Fuel Gauge

I start my car up this morning and my check gas light comes on, wife drove the car last. I go to gas station and put 6 gallons in it and gauge shows full. Not maxed to the peg like it usually is but full. After driving for 10 miles it's around 3/4 tank. I turn it off then back on, and it reads full again. I know it's not full. Any idea's ?

It's most likely your fuel level sender in the tank

I'm guessing I have to drop the tank to check that out. Any write ups on this.

search for writeups on how to swap fuel pumps, specifically looking for walbro 255 pumps, there's quite a few topics about it. But basically you need to drop your exhaust, PHB, sometimes the rearend but most people don't need to, and the tank should come out with a lot of fenagling. It is a bitch though, good luck. There are ways to trouble shoot the system without pulling the tank, but I bet it's that sender, otherwise it will probably be a bad wire, connection, or short somewhere.

I filled the car up and the gauge maxed out. I've drove 100 miles and it hasn't moved. If I turn the car off, then turn the key to on (with out cranking) a couple of times the gauge will start bounceing around where it's suppose to be. Once I crank it up, it goes back to full.

OK, 150 miles on the tank now. Crank the car up and it shows full tank. Wait 15 - 20 sec. gauge starts to move to 3/4 tank. Stays for a little bit and then heads back to full. Stays for a little then starts to move slowly back to to 3/4 tank. Give half throttle and jumps back to full tank. Does this everytime. I'm just trying to pinpoint this before I drop the tank.

Yeah I would say the sending unit is toast. Dropping the tank is not a big deal, I got mine out in maybe an hour, did not need to drop the rear end. Only had to remove the exhaust, filler neck, and a brace.

or you could just cut a hole in the rear hump...makes it a snap to change out the pumps... just grab yourself a peice of sheet metal and use some gasket maker silicone between it and the body and secure it with screws...So much easier than dropping the tank...

these things are amazing and get the job done in NO time...you might be able to borrow one from a body shop...and you won't have to risk cutting into the tank...

Where can I get the sending unit? Everyone I call says you have to buy it with a fuel pump. I'm sure a new fuel pump wouldn't hurt, but I would rather step to a better fuel pump than stock if I'm going to replace it.
