Default Check engine light came on today

Driving home from work. I took my car to Autozone and they said the code was P0420 -- catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 in below Threshold.....does this mean I have a bad cat? My car is an 00 WS6 A4 with 47k. Is it common for the cats to go out? I don't have an owner's manual, how long is the emissions warranty? My guess is 5 yr / 50k.

No big deal. My dad's Z28 started doing this crap last week. He decided it was time to ditch the stock exhaust and go L.T. and scrap the emissions. Have the code cleared, sometimes its just a fluke. I wouldnt think your cats would be bad yet, but you just never know. Not sure about the emissions warranty, just call your local dealership and ask.

Yes it's common for the cats to go out. Known to be a defective part. They are covered up to 100,000 miles under GM warranty. If you want to keep them check with a GM dealer. Also search here.

In December 2006 GM extended the cat warranty to 10yrs/120K on the 00-02 F-cars.

I did a search on code P0420 and someone said it could also be caused by a bad sir pump, does anyone know if that is correct?

If there was a problem with the secondary air system you'd be throwing codes for it - here's the description/diagnostics for P0420: www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic9010.php
