Default Water Pump Replacement

Anyone have a writeup or just a quick how-to on swapping a water pump? Mine decided to break today and is pissing coolant everywhere.

Just from looking at it, it looks like I just pull the thermostat housing, the hoses, the belt, and take off a few bolts around the pump and it comes off. Put back the gaskets, maybe throw on some sealant, stick the new one back on and put it all back together.

Really that simple? I've done water pumps in a few cars before just want to make sure there isn't anything that I'm going to run into.

You gotta get new gaskets. Its pretty simple to do. Take off the air lid and components, drain the radiator, take off the serpentine belt, disconnect all the hoses, unbolt the six 10mm bolts and maneuver the old pump out. To install, place all six bolts on the new pump along with the gaskets, align and hand tighten all the bolts. Once its all in place, tighten the bolts to 18ft lbs, attach all the hoses, serpentine belts, air lid and fill er back up. Your done, simple!! I dont think I missed anything.

Super easy to change, easier than spark plugs IMO.

The new replacement pumps should come with a thermostat and housing - don't think the stock tstat or a hypertech powerstat will fit the new pump.

Alright, awesome, thanks for your help guys! I need to find some gaskets, I don't think they came with the pump...

I'll figure all the little stuff out tomorrow as far as Tstat and stuff goes, won't know how everything fits together until it's in my hands.

It isn't hard to do at all...it can be a little cramped at times, and it will certainly be messy, but it doesn't take me much time at all now to drop the pump and reinstall it. You'll figure it out, no problem.

From the sound of #8 I'm not surprised If it is anything like #6 on my 3800 I could see why, that thing was awful to get out and back in...

Lol seriously, I've looked at it and I do not want to change the plugs on these cars at all.

I think mines is about to go too but after reading on this subject, some think that its the gasket that fails between the bump and motor, not the pump...so I dont know.

Depends on where the leak is coming from...it is pretty easy to tell if it is a gasket versus coming out of the weep hole. You just have to get under there and look...if it is coming out of the weep hole (pump problem), you'll easily see it dripping down on your pulley.

The pump is $150 at AdvancedAuto and is new, not remanufactured. Comes with gaskets and a lifetime warranty.
The gaskets will get damaged when you pull the pump from the block, impossible to tell if they were leaking before you started wrenching... just my opinion: I'd rather replace the pump than doing the job twice.... very often the pump itself leaks at the seal around the pump shaft.

^^^

That's what I got, lifetime warranty pump with new thermostat. Took me about an hour to replace it today, thanks a lot for the info guys! Hardest part was getting that old gasket off, christ it was friggen forged on there or something lol.

I didn't check my old pump, but I know that it dumped about a gallon of coolant in a 20 minute drive to my dad's work and it was pouring out from under the pulley. Figured it was better to just replace it since it's not that expensive.

when i bought a new pump from gm it was the ls2 style which will bolt in but as another poster pointed out the ls1 stat wont work. you may have to buy a ls2 160 stat. just a fyi! i've got a ls1 hypertech 160 stat new in box if anyone wants to buy.

mine was leaking down onto the k-member and was the gaskets, changed them and have been good to go. i think mine went because its sits alot so the orings dryed up...the ls series engines are know for the gaskets failing before the pump.especially the 5.3/6.0's,which i have personally seen alot of.

Hey, guys.

Quick question: Is it safe to run a 160° thermostat during the Winter with weather temperatures ranging between 10-20°?
