Default Removing carbon buildup

The modern method (without opening the engine) is to use products like GM Top Engine Cleaner.

Older methods are:
- ATF mixed in the oil
- ATF mixed in the gas
- Brake fluid misted in the intake system (similar to the GM Top Engine Cleaner procedure)
- Water misted in the intake system (similar to the GM Top Engine Cleaner procedure)

Who know how good / bad are those methods?

Honestly, I would just use Seafoam. That's specifically what it is made for. I know ATF has detergents in it, but can't imagine it would be as effective as seafoam. Brake fluid seems like a terrible idea, and water sounds like a hydrolock waiting to happen.

I just did the seafoam process to my car and runs alot smoother now. It fixed an idle problem I had. My engine has 90k on it. Seafoam FTW

Yep, I hear you guys. But over here we don't have the same stuff.
No one has a liquid for the intake, maybe a spray that will cost $30 - $40 !!!
No Seafoam, no GM stuff :-(

Again, we don't have this stuff here. We just have additives to add to the fuel.

ok the main ingrediant is ammonium! with ammonium as a base you mix in, alcohol highest isopropal %, fuel injector cleaner, some brake cleaner, some marval mistery oil or WD-40 or ATF, these are the main ingrediants into cleaning the engine! if u feel you should add other ingrediants you could!

You may look for the MotorVac CarbonClean system. (They distribute internationally http://www.motorvac.com/) The CarbonClean treatment is similar to GM's top engine cleaner, except the service is more extensive and cleans more of the fuel system. From my reading, it performs similar duties as Seafoam but is much faster to perform and easier to do. (The full treatment cycle is complete while the car is in the shop - no worries about driving off gas, etc.) The downside is that you need a mechanic to hook up a special machine to do the work.

I paid a local shop in the US $85 for the treatment and got an additional 3 miles per gallon (1.25 kilometers per liter) for all types of driving. The treatment paid for itself in 8000 kilometers. I can imagine that you would have a much faster return on the investment given the gas prices in Europe!

I believe BMW also endorses a similar treatment. You may find a dealer in Europe who offers a similar type of product.

It should be hidden in another can or a bottle... you need a lot of papers to ship chemicals oversea. For a bottle of "wisky" they won't bother

a hydrolock can happen with seafoam also if you add it to quickly. but yea you can use water.

Top engine cleaner work on most customers cars. Pour the bottle of top engine cleaner slowy into the vacum off the brake booster. Rev the motor for about 5 to 6 seconds and let the car sit over night and let the engine cleaner do it magic. The next moring you should fell and hear a big differance. Works best on the Cadilliac Northstar motors. Seafoam is good stuff too.
