Default 2k RPM+ Whine- 98 Formula!

I have a new whine sound that is bothering the hell out of me and I need to fix. The sound occurs above 2k rpm at idle or while driving. I am not sure when it started though but nothing has changed. Just happened all of a sudden one night. If i am revving the motor from the engine bay the whine sounds like it's coming from somewhere near the intake but not positive. It does not quite sound like the powersteering pump whine since the pump and rack are about 6 months old. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

And to note from the belt squeak thread, my whine does not quiet or stop with the AC on nor does it sound like the power steering squeak.

Yeah after listening closer last night, it does sound like its coming from the idler pulley. How hard is the change on this? Do I need power tools? Also I think I read once that you can just repack and regrease them or is it better to buy a new pulley? Thanks

Just to clarify from reading a few of the threads on replacing the idler pulley, my sound is NOT a squeak but more of a whine from 2k RPM and up. And it also happens when the car is hot or cold, nothing makes it stop. It sounds like its coming from near the TB/Intake area but not sure because it can be loud when i revv the motor up. Any ideas? Thanks

Thats easy. That would be the super chargers that came on the 98 formulas only. It is in the intake. You need to take off the intake and see if it is working properly.

Anyone replace the AC idler pulley or regrease it like above? Thanks for that post! ^

I wish someone has had this problem and able to help idenitfy better, it sounds like a high pitched whine which gets loud the faster I go. Almost like the pulley turning faster and speeding up something. I just dont want to pull off the pulley and it not be the problem? Any other ideas? Thanks

Hey man. I haven't had experience first hand with this, but I remember being in my sister's boyfriend's car when it had this problem. You would start it up.. and it would sound fine. Then if you revv it a little you hear, like an EEEEEEEEEEE. and then once you start moving it just gets worse and worse as the RPMs go up. It was indeed his idler pulley that had this problem. He had to get it fixed, and the problem was gone.

Ok great that helps then. Because it is such an odd sound. I will let everyone know how it goes. Was the idler pulley easy to get off? Thanks
