Default Haha... ha... seriously?

Ever wondered what it would cost to have the dealership replace your spark plugs and spark plug wires?

I took my '00 Z28 to the dealership to have the oil changed, tires rotated, and fuel filter replaced. The dealership called me and told me that my spark plug wires needed changing. I said, "How much extra would that be?"... he replied, "$921.22."

"So does that include the cost of everything else? Oil, tire rotation, and fuel filter replacement? Or is that just for the spark plug wire change?"

"Sir, that is the cost of spark plugs, spark plug wires, and the lab/mechanical work required to install them."

When I went to pick up the car, I got a break down of the parts/labor:

Spark Plugs - $74.64
Wire Kit - $185.08
Labor - $661.50 (6 hours x $110.25)

So did you actually pay over $900?

Shop near my house will change all 8 for $100 labor, it only takes a friggin hour, you bring the spark plugs. If anyone pays more than $36.00 for new wires at Advance Auto they're just nuts. Those wires are just as good as factory AC Delco wires, been using them on my 427 for 8 years, they're perfect.

But since it only takes me 45 minutes to do them all I've been doing mine for 10 years. Spark plug change equals ~$20.00.

i'd never pay somebody to change my spark plugs, especially not a dealership. If you think ours are hard, check out a mitsubishi montero's. my buddy's got one and you have to take the intake manifold off to get to the three DS plugs! i'd hate to know the labor charge for that haha

Did they include the Vaseline with that price? I didn't see it on the invoice. I hope you got that included...

'Cause you just got bent over.

Spark plugs on these cars is cake. I do them on my car in less than 20 minutes. Most other Camaro/Firebirds in 40. I'd only charge you $330.

Why did you go to a dealership for that though anyways...you just paid enough money to buy a full exhaust and a good few tanks of gas because you didn't change your own spark plugs. lol

Even doing plugs the first time around on my LS1, it was easy. You just have to be methodical on how you get to them. What gets me is that all can be done from the top. I think that's awesome as opposed to some cars I've done which have had to access the plugs from ridiculous angles from underneath.

Wow, that is a crazy *** price. WTF? ? ?

The GM stealership in my town wanted 165 for just the plugs to be swapped. I said I will pass, and did all myself + Got some MSD wires. And it all still cost me under 100 Bucks with new Delco Iridum plugs.

I don't know though, the dealership by my house is pretty cool. When I fried my PCM, they did a new flash for 60 Bucks. Then welded up my new Magnaflow exhaust for free.

No, I did not pay that. I still have the stock wires I took off of my '02 Camaro SS... the wires only have 2k miles on 'em. While I was putting on the SLP LT headers on my '02 SS, I went ahead and replaced the plugs (gapped for a supercharger -- gotta D1SC) and wires. (see sig)

As for the '00 Z28 -- I needed the oil changed, tires rotated, and fuel filter replaced. I usually do all that myself, but work has been hectic, plus I'm living in a new house and none of my tools are here... quite frankly, I just didn't have time to fool with it. But the dealership called me and told me I needed new plug wires and I just asked for a price estimate. I couldn't help but laugh and said, "No thanks."

Wow. I think shops around here charge $100 or so for the labor. I changed mine. I have headers and no AIR system and it was still a PITA. If it was stock, I might consider paying $100.

Wish it was that easy on my 98 V6, gotta pull the front wheels and twist at odd angles for #3 and stupid crazy angles with swivels and extensions to pull #6. I'd like to meet the engineer who designed the exhaust manifolds on these cars and punch him in the face I heard they got smarter after 99 though and 2000-up you can get to from the top.
