Default Awful noise (UPDATE)

I didn't know where to post this but here goes.

For a couple of weeks, when I start my car, it makes a hard clapping noise for a second or so on the passenger back side of the motor.(Not clicking but Clapping)

Today as I was passing a Monte I gave him a WOT acceleration, just to show the power from a roll. Car downshifted to first and spun, then I layed off.

Immediatly after that I got an awfull metal howling grind from the same area in the motor (Passenger rear, above starter).

I pulled over, opened the hood to hear it. Then I shut it off. Started it again, and noise persisted.
Shut it off again and tried to restart again but NO GO.
Sounded like starter kiking in but motor wouldn't turn.

Anybody had similar incident or knows what it could be.???

Sorry this is long but I wanted to explain it right.
Thanks

Nine Ball I tried to PM you but you do not accept. I would appreciate your help, comments, speculations anything.

Anyone cares to respond?

Can it be just the starter or some thing more serious?

Well.... to help hold you off until someone better at this comes along, I'd try to pull out the starter and see if it's damaged at all, and while you're at it, might as well see if you can get a look at the flywheel gears to see if they're chewed up at all or not. That way you can either isolate the problem to the starter or rule it out. Good luck!

What got me puzzled was that that wheel howling metal grind was happenning when the engine ran.

On previous starter problems nothing like that ever happened. If I chewed a tooth it would either not engage or it would clunk.

I wonder if it would be possible for the starter gear not to dissengage all the way and rub against the flywheel.

God that noise was tearing my heart appart.

If the starter does not have full contact it will go SCREEEEECH and free wheel.

Can you better define the sound?

Is your car under warranty still?

Yeah pro stock. And the starter sceetches now, but like i described above after the short WOT, that area (Starter) made a like a belt metal wheel noise. You know like bad wheel bearings but with a more pronounced howl. And that noise was there when the engine ran at stop in park. After a couple of restarts the motor would just not turn and all I got was that starter screetch.

Sounds like the starter failed to dissengage to me. Your flywheel teeth are also probably toast if that's the case.

Well, if you have a jack, you can check the starter, obviously use jack stands and exercise safety precautions.

The starter is on the passenger side.

If you look at it, you can see it's held on by two 15mm bolts. You may have busted off one of the mounting tabs, it's happened before.

Valvegod wants $150 for one, I have a 98-99 one here, not sure what the dealer wants. Easy to change, disconnect the battery for sure.

LOL, I know that Colonel, thanks for the feedback, I'll spend Saturday doing that.

BTW last month I took your advice and got the TCI SS3500 for my setup and I have to thank you. I improved from 12.87 to 12.6 (before I got the ET's) and with them 12.43(Still have to practice launching more)
Got 125 dry N2O but haven't got that timed yet.

Thanks again you're the best.

I had a guy come in a few weeks ago with a similar problem. He did some kind of mods himself and fugged up the starter. I wasnt able to work on this car, but the tech told me the starter would not disengage.

Well, I took it to the dealership (They LOVE me), since the car is still under warranty and they comfirmed that the flywheel had a few teeth missing which caused the starter to fail to dissengage.
Now here is the trick!
They claim that the differential gear change from 3:23 to 3:73 is what caused that.
Unless i'm mistaken I think its BULL.
What do you guys think??

Yeap, I went to pick it up, and you wouldn't believe the shape that flywheel was in.
I was expecting an couple of teeth missing, but to my ammazement, not only that but the damn thing was cracked at 3 places (right at the bolt holes) one cracked clear through.
The good thing is while inspecting the motor, the dealership came to the conclusion it was a defective part, since the motor was untouched and the TC was well installed.
They said they never saw anything like this on an LS1 before.
So it cost me $50 for the tow.
I'll try to get PICS posted to show ya all.

From this point forward, don't listen to a thing this moron has to say. I can't believe the idiots some of these dealerships hire.

Not trying to hijack, but thats nothing compared to the line of crap my girls parents got after they argued their 623 front brake job on their 19000 miles 01 escape. The rotors were 232 a piece, why were they in need of replacement. "the rotors used on that vechicle are european rotors, in europe they drive much diffrent then people here in the us, when american drivers drive in america with their "european" rotors they wear at 3 times the rate they would in europe." My jaw about hit the floor. Wish they had kept the rotors so I could have at least mic'd them.
