Default How to stop squeaking belts?

One of my belts is making a squeaking/squeeling sound on cold starts. I am not sure which belt it is since I haven't taken them off. Is there any way I can stop this without buying a new belt? For some reason I remember hearing you can take it off and scrub it with soap but I am not sure. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Jack

It's been my experience that you can quiet belts temporarily, but the noise always comes back. Save yourself the hassle and and replace the noisy belt. Good luck!

It was my experience that if you spray it with the belt spray, the squeaking goes away. The problem bugged me for, I'd say a month or so, when my car had ~30-35kmiles. Then it just mysteriously disappeared. The car has 74k miles now and in those 2 years and 40+ kmiles I never had this problem again. Go figure. The dealer told me at the time it's a common problem... not sure if he knew about TSB.. ..I didn't. I'm replacing the original drive belt right now due to natural wear...

just change the belt...
you will need a new belt..about $25
and a 15mm socket(with the ratchet too of course)...to hold the tesnioner loose so you can get off the old and put on the new...

1997-1999: Service Bulletin: Accessory Drive Squeak (Replace Idler Pulley)
Subject: Technical - Accessory Drive Squeak (Replace Idler Pulley)
Source: Chevrolet Service Bulletin
Number: 99-06-01-007
Models:
1997 - 1999 Chevrolet Corvette
1998 - 1999 Chevrolet Camaro
1998 - 1999 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7 L Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)

Condition:

Some customers may comment on a squeak noise coming from the engine or accessory drive while the engine is running . This squeak may vary in volume and may be heard inside the vehicle with the windows up and the radio on.

Cause:

The idler pulley dust shield may distort during assembly due to torquing of the mounting bolt. This distortion may cause the idler pulley dust shield to contact the bearing race and the pulley resulting in the squeak noise.

Correction:

A new idler pulley assembly is available with a thicker dust shield to prevent the distortion of the dust shield. The previous dust shield thickness is 0.61 mm. The new dust shield thickness is 1.37 mm.

Important

Do not over-torque the mounting bolt or the condition may reoccur.
Do not use pneumatic or electric tools for installation of the idler pulley assembly.

Tighten

Torque the idler pulley bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

do TSBs have to be followed even after the warranty has expired? Mine has been doing it, and I got the ASP tensioner pulley, but haven't put it on yet. I may have the dealer re-do the dust shield, then put on the ASP pulley
