While I change my oil 99% of the time on base at the auto hobby shop, there is that 1% that I'll do it in my driveway. The first time I did, I had already drained the oil before realizing I didn't have a filter wrench, and was trying to remove a Mobil 1 filter. Hands had a little oil on them, and it took me a good 15 minutes lying under the car using my hands to finally get it off. It's not that it was over tight, I just couldn't get a good grip on it. So I use K&N ones just in case, and also because they seem to be built really well. Personal preference, ymmv.

Go to harbor freight tools if you have one nearby, and buy one of these.

I got mine from a friend, but its the same thing and it works on all types of filters and its THE-****. It really helps when doing my gf's 05 V6 mustang, if youve done one of those than you know what I mean.
Youll thank me afterwards im tellin ya.

As far as oil I'm sticking with German Castrol til I see tests on Edge or anything else.IMO nothing else comes close. If you don't care what brand of Full Synthetic your running, O'Reilly is running a special right now 5qts of their hose brand Full Synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter for 17.99 .Now thats a good deal.Oh I believe Coastal makes that oil , with a O'Reilly label.

50 WEIGHT is to heavy, It does great for driveing oil temps up and not get to critcal parts on time due to crappy pumpabilty. LS motors where built and designed for and recommended a 30 weight oil. If a engine builder builds it loose and recommends a 50 weight that is fine but not a stock bottom end ls motor.

I always buy 6 and use 5.5 quarts, RP 5w-30 and a RP filter. Made significantly less valve train noise when i stepped up to the RP, previously ran M1 5w-30 for 2 years and it was amazing how quiet it was under the hood after the switch. Of course this is just 1 case of 10 million but im very pleased with my decision to switch to RP

I've always ran Mobil 1 5W-30, and I just switched to a Mobil 1 oil filter on the last change.
My car has always had a lot of valvetrain noise-I wonder what switching to a higher weight would do to help? Don't mean to steal this thread, but I guess it could be oil related Anyone else have trouble with a tapping/rattling sound in the 1500-2500 rpm range under LIGHT load when engine is warmed up (oil is thinner)?

yea lol talk about timing. I have 0 complaints about M1 and I used to be one of the people who just accepted the valve train noise as part of owning an LS1, but she whispers under the hood now that its got RP. Its always worth a try you might end up happy as a clam too, I know I was.

Most of the oil analysis I've seen for lsx engines shows German Castrol (Castrol Syntec European formula is what it says on the bottle) and Pennzoil Platinum to be among the best choices.
Pennzoil Platinum is cheap and available at any walmart
I use a full 6 qts in mine
