Both the old and new style ls6 valley covers have an "air-oil separator" (that's what the box thing is). The difference is the new style is sealed except for tiny holes in the bottom cover, which are the "PCV valve" (not really a valve, just a restriction). I found some mention of this restriction maybe being able to cause crankcase pressure buildup in some conditions. I put the old style in mine. If I want a restriction type valve instead of the regular kind, I can change it easily.

I have a couple of questions, as I want to do this mod next weekend.

1) Someone told me to get a LS2 valley cover is this the same part number that you are talking about when you say 04+ LS6 cover?

2) I will be using a procharger on my car and still want to do the catch can set up for the added insurance, this valley cover will still work great with the catch can set up correct?

Also I need to go look under the hood but everyone says how the layout is all cleaned up. Does anyone have any pictures on what lines are no long needed when switching to the LS6 style?

Also is this even really needed if a catch can system is installed? The reason I am still thinking about it is with the LS6 style the valley cover hose hook up is located nicely in the front of the engine so easy to hook up the catch can system cleanly.

Ya I see that now, found a good write up on LS1howto.com. I guess I will be doing this mod, I saw that I had the "bullseyes" on my block so that sucks looks like I will have to clearance the block for the valley cover to fit. I was hoping mine would be an LS6 block since its an 02 and probably towards the end of the LS1 production run.

For the people who have already done the newer ls6 valley swap.

It appears it would be impossible to use the ls1 coolant lines as the little nubs on the ls6 valley would be in the way right??

Especially if you go with a ls6 intake and try to knock off the ribs to use the ls1 lines.

Use block offs in the rear and a crossover tube up front.

Also, LS6 coolant lines are like $65, if you just wanted to convert to those. Anything required to make the 04+ LS6 Valley Cover to fit is worth it.

No, with the ls1 intake the old coolant pipes will still fit, with just a little bending at the front to get around the outlet from the valley cover.

I know this thread is a little old, but I am getting ready to do this and was leery of grinding in the block. I talked to a friend of mine who builds off-shore power boat motors for a living and he told me to take as big a continuous piece of tin foil as I could fit in there and put that in first, tape it together if you have to, but make it as big as you can. Then lay the rags on top of that and make them slightly damp as the grinding dust is more likely to stick to the damp rags when you pick them up.
Also I am going to rig up my shop vac, or have someone hold it as close to the grinding wheel as possible while I am doing the cutting.
Thought this might help someone it the future.

It's actually very easy to cut the block. I was able to fit a fullsize hacksaw in there to make a vertical cut, then took some vise grips, locked onto that notch and broke it off. Had some rags stuffed over the cam and everything else under the valley cover. Then used an oil soaked rag and a vacuum to get rid of the shavings which took the longest time of the whole mod.. Using a hacksaw will minimize shavings. This was almost 2 years ago and was well worth te effort. I keep that little chunk I broke off in my car with me

No need to make this into some kind of a big deal to worry about. Just do a good job of covering up and have at it. Did mine back in 2004 and have put over 200,000 miles on the car since then. Just use a little common sense when you do it and it will work out just fine. Did the LS6 valley cover and intake at the same time.

I'm gettin ready to do an LS6 Mainfold/LS6 valley cover swap on my stock 2000 LS1. So far I have the manifold and new intake/tb gaskets. If I were to order the LS6 VC from gmpartsdirect, does it come with everything needed to do the swap? Am I missing anything???

Edit : I may eventually add a catch can to this setup.

It comes from GMpartsdirect with the gaskets and bolts. There are a couple of other things you may need. There is a parts list on here:http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18

The part number for the VC on this list is for the old style one, if you want the newer one with the internal PCV its: 12577927

I did this on my LS1 converted Porsche 944 a few weeks ago. While thinking about cutting on the block is daunting, actually doing it was very easy. I covered everything up very well with rags and sealed it with duct tape first. Then I measured down 3/4" of an inch and marked the horizontal cut line using a sharpie. Plugged in my air powered cut off wheel and went to town! I then cut down from the top with the cut off wheel, broke off the piece and cleaned it up with a carbide bur.

I did have to bend the LS1 coolant tubes a little on the front to get around the LS6 brass barb, but that was easy to do with a set of channel locks.

I also have the Elite Engineering catch can, hose goes from the LS6 valley cover to the catch can that's mounted on the front of the passenger's side head, then out of the catch can to the PCV valve that's then plugged into the intake manifold.
