Default Cat removal

So I would like to remove the Cats on my 00 SS and just bolt some regular exhaust pipe in there place. How big of job is it? Anyone have a write-up?

I was thinking about unbolting the cat pipes on my 00 Z and knocking out the cats with a steel pipe. They have 100,000 miles on them and there's a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the exhaust around the passenger cat.

I was wondering if there's any significant HP gain to doing this? Like a free mod.

An alternative might be to simply pull down the stock cats and hollow them out. Retaining the appearance might prove helpful down the line.

Plan C (which is in my opinion is the best) would be to pick up a set of long tube headers and off road y-pipe to match and it will eliminate the cats and should mate smoothly with your catback.

Yeah, if you aren't gonna do the long tubes and a new y, just drop em and use a metal rod to bang the crap out.

It isn't too much work, but it'd probably be easier to just take the full exhaust manifold off instead of disconnecting the y from the shorties, it is just to little good space.

Also expect to use a LOT of pb blaster as them suckers are probably rusted all sorts of ugly.

I think Mufflex wants $264 for a set of shorty pipes. They're awfully pretty chrome ones, though, and would look a hell of a lot better with chrome shorty heads (or cleaned up stockers) if you're in an emissions state.

My dad suggested wearing a filter mask when you beat the cat material out. He said it can get dusty and that you really don't want to be breathing it in.

Someone on here sells an off road Y pipe for stock manifolds.

That sounds pretty good, I wouldn't mind leaving the "cat shells" on to maintain a visual inspection. Anyone have any ideas how it would sound with stock manifolds, gutted cats, and a hooker catback? My hooker catback sounds nice now but I would like a little more volume.
