The poorer flowing filters (paper) remove more particles, and the better flowing filters (cotton) remove less particles.
K&N may not "filter" as well, but the end result is better air flow, which in my opinion is highly important on an NA car. Our intakes need to scavenge as much air as possible.
i just recently switched from my K & N filter to a Fram filter and i cant even hardly notice the difference. The only reason i switched was just because i was too lazy to clean the KN filter..lol.

I run a bottom feeding CAI in western Iowa where everything is cornfield and dust and I wouldn't trust a K&N to filter already distilled water to be honest. They are fine if you are running a clean track or good southern roads where fine particles aren't a concern, but street driving out here, I'd prefer to know my filter is catching the fine particles.
That and I've seen some of the horror's an improperly oiled filter can cause. If you live in an area where there isn't a concern with dust or the like and you use common sense when oiling, they can be fine. I use to use one when I lived in Florida. Piece of mind though is a good fram. Never had a fitment issue, they do their job, and they are pretty cheap to replace.
When I bought the car it had a K/N filter in it which didn't seal inside the SLP lid very well. The previous owner did not install the supplied gasket with the filter so it was loose. I found grass on the screen of the MAF. I tossed the K/N and I picked up a FRAM and couldn't tell any difference.
