Default Confused?

When you put headers on does it make your car run rich or lean?

Sometimes neither. Mine ran the same before and after so far as I could tell. Wideband O2s checked out at 13.3:1.

Moving this to EXTERNAL ENGINE.

Tons of people run headers without tuning. Lots of people run cams without tuning.

Tuning can be a great thing, but I think too many people see it as a 'must' because of the big internet push that tuning gets. It's only a must in extreme cases, most mild setup cars run decent, fine, or even good without it.

Plenty of H/C & header LS1s were around and doing good before dyno tuning LS1s became common.

Also, those of you blaming rich conditions on melting cats, I don't get that?

It seems odd to me because, back when I used to use cats, it was always & only a LEAN condition or afterfire that would end up overheating, breaking up, or melting my cats. Runing rich never casued that for me... I don't get it?

Do you have cats? If not, then it's always going to smell 'rich/dirty'. I have spent hours tuning my car for better low end driving and warm starting, and even gone so far (too far) as to lean it out to the point that it would hesitate when getting on the gas from a stop, and even then it still smelled rich/dirty.

Ok that sounds like my problem. Will running rich hurt the motor? And what affect will the HPP3 power program have on my car? I am using the HPP3 PP right now.

Depends on how rich. If your oil is dripping with gas, then yeah that's bad. A little hint of gas on the dipstick is not a big deal though, all my cars (modded or not) always have that. But people perceive things differently though, what is 'a little' to some, is 'a lot' to others sometimes. Never heard of headers alone causing anyone to run rich enough to do any real harm, it's just that you will not be seeing your full power potential if it's rich.

The HPP will raise timing....

Simply put, raising the timing will generally give you more power right up to the point that you begin to detonate. Detonation due to more timing can usually be faught with lower temp t-stats and/or fan settings. Not to say that the extra timing will cause you to detonate, but it might if you're still using stock fan settings keeping you at or above 220*...
