Default MAF Screen in/out

I see that people run ported MAF's and the after market ones don't have screens but I was told that w/out the screen you actually hurt the MAF's reading's creating poor performance?

Eh some say it hurts, some say it helps, its been covered tons on here. Some say tuners have a hard time tuning a ported maf car also.

Try a search and see what you come up with.

In some instances descreening results in error codes due to turbulence in the air stream.

Did it on two different TA's and never an issue in the past nine years? Just make sure you tune for it?

Every ls1 car iv had always had it descreened when I bought it EXCEPT for the 99 z28. Out of my 3 ls1s, the 99 had the smoothest idle. Cant tell you its because on the screen but, its the only one to have the screen.
I would leave the screen in. It will do more good than harm.

Out of my 2 LS1's both of them have had descreened MAF's. Never had a problem with either of them. I will be taking my car in to get tuned soon though, so I'll talk to the tuner about it when I do to see his thoughts on the matter

6 of one half a dozen of the other, if your worried about it leave it alone for peace of mind. You wont miss that 2-3 horsepower anyways.

This has been covered countless times. Half the people in here will say they did it to their car and it's fine. The other half will say they "heard" it's not good for your car and would leave it in for "peace of mind". My brother and I as well as most people in our car club have descreened their mafs with no problems. The stock maf will only flow around 800cfm while descreened it will flow over 1000cfm. That's around 20% more air flow?

And again. These threads pop up every few weeks and are filled with people saying they "heard" it can cause problems or say "I just wouldn't do it to be safe".

I have yet to hear someone say, "I descreened my maf and my car got screwed up", or "I descreened my maf and my tuner was having trouble tuning my car because of it". All I ever hear is a bunch of hear say.

The only time its even close to worth taking the screen out is if your trying to get every last ounce of HP out of your motor and/or your trying to break some kind of ET record and just need a couple hundreds off the clock. My philosophy

if you have a good air filter go for it.. I removed mine when I ported it out and sawed off the middle I-beam. ...but if you are just considering on just taking out the MAF screen I say it's pointless.

Here's a fun little experiment girls and boys. First step, go outside and breathe normally.......Second step, go into your house, open your window, and breathe into the bugnet .... Did you feel deprived of air? NO? EXACTLY!!

its not about potential flow, its about the resistance which creates vacuum seen by the engine. if your getting tuned i say pull it.

in case you all forgot, GM upgraded "ls1s" to descreened 85mm MAFs on C5s in their quest to 400hp...

when upgrading to a lid the stock maf, even descreened, is the smallest point of the intake tract.
