**STICKY WORTHY** GMMG Exhaust.. How To Eliminate Rasp * Lots of Vids and Pics*
This maybe STICKY WORTHY!!!
About every week or so there are at least 5 GMMG threads. Everyone keeps asking about rasp, flowmaster merges and cutouts And It keeps getting annoying that myself and RevGTO need to keep educating everyone about these components..
Ok first of all, here is my exhaust set up that I am currently running on my Trans Am..
QTP 1 3/4" LTs + Custom Kooks 3" O/R Y Pipe + 3" x 3.5" Flowmaster Merge + 3" x 3" x 25" Powerstick Bullet Muffler + DMH 3" E-CutOut + GMMG Catback
Now to educate some people.. GMMG sounds absolutely PERFECT on a STOCK car. That means STOCK manifolds, STOCK Y Pipe.. It sound perfect
This is a vid from 2005.. My car was ALL STOCK
Now when you add LTs and go with an O/R Y pipe the GMMG starts to get raspy. This is a FACT.. Now by adding a catted Y pipe it will tame the raspiness down to be more bareable. I don't have a vid (of my personal car) to show where I had a STOCK cam and LTs with an O/R Y pipe..
But from here on out, all the vids and pics will be of my car with my cam.. 228/232 .58/.595 110+4
So lets move forward to LTs + O/R Y pipe + Flowmaster Merge. Here is my car going into storage from 2008 running this set up. Listen to how raspy this set up is. And this is USING a Flowmaster merge.
Now it is April of 2009. I still have my same set up as above but I added my E-CutOut, which wasn't working at the time for my dyno vids The set up is so loud you'll notice my tuner wearing ear muffs
I was idlinig VERY RICH here. Just added 42# injectores and 85mm MAF
Little 4500 RPM pull
5500 RPM Pull
6000 RPM Pull
6500 RPM Pull
Continuing on in post #2..........

So Later in 2009, these vids were shot in July. This is with my current exhaust set up that I posted in post #1
QTP 1 3/4" LTs + Custom Kooks 3" O/R Y Pipe + 3" x 3.5" Flowmaster Merge + 3" x 3" x 25" Powerstick Bullet Muffler + DMH 3" E-CutOut + GMMG Catback
Here are some pics.. I got the Powerstick and E-CutOut installed May of 2009
Now are the videos.. These vids are showing how that by adding the Powestick in the I pipe is what killed about 98% of my rasp. NOT the Flowmaster Merge. In the presvious vids you can hear how raspy it is. With these vids, when you listen, I tell you when I close my windows so you can hear from both the inside and the outside. Also I try to keep it in the 2100 RPM to 2300 RPM range where the rasp starts. With my set up it is ALMOST no exsistent!!!!!!

So now you've heard my car with my current set up, this time I will show you videos with my E-CutOut OPEN
The first clip is an idle clip. In the vid it starts off with the E-CutOut CLOSED. I then will tell to you when I OPEN the cutout
Idle Clip With EVERYTHING in bold From Post #1
Track Runs.. NO RASP or POPPING. Again my current set up with the E-CutOut OPEN.. You can clearly hear my exhaust set up over the 04 Cobra

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayzirfP3498
So I hope you all enjoyed my videos that I've put together over the years. Again just by adding a Flowmaster merge, YOU WILL NOT KILL RASP.. It all has to do with the PowerStick in the I pipe.. Ohh yeah and 1 piece of advice about installing the Powerstick... The trick is to install it against the grain
Please post up any comments or questions that you have!!
Thanks
-Jonas

This is my GMMG exhaust. I have Dyno Don shorties with 2.5" y into a 3" merge, a 3" Magnaflow spun converter, and 3" to the gmmg.

You can clearly hear the rasp, and notice how you can distinctly hear my car over all the traffic and background noise. I had this setup for about 4 years. It was very raspy at 1800-2200 rpms under load like when you're going up a hill or something. It sounded bad. Once it started to make my daughter run away scared and start crying, I sold it for a Magnaflow. While it was "cool" back when I was younger (like early to mid 20s) I have to say that a quieter exhaust makes the car much more enjoyable

Great vids, car sounds nice now. Im considering the GMMG, might end up doing what you did with yours.
I guess you could say that your catback setup now is alot like the Stainless Works Chambered system? With 3 mufflers in it?
Ive wondered how the Stainless works system sounds, but damn they want alot for it lol

I have a three muffler powerstick set up. 30 inch in the I and two 24's in the back, basically a gmmg clone. Stepped headers 1 3/4- 1 7/8 ory big cam and other stuff. It's loud but not overbearing. It gets nasty when I'm on the gas. No rasp though. I agree the I pipe muffler is the key. I installed mine correctly though. Curious to hear why you should do it backwards? Classic chambered powersticks have a full 3 inch opening all the way through and the fins are pretty small. Not alot of restriction.
